I don't know. I'm actually a little surprised that the M276 DEH engines require indexing, but many here say that it does. Logically, if the charge is homogeneous, then the mixture should be ignitable whichever way the plug's gap faces. I can see where it makes a huge difference in the DES engines because only in the vicinity of the spark plug, and probably mostly on the side nearest the injector, is lambda 1, stoichiometric. Elsewhere in the combustion chamber, the mixture is leaner, perhaps too lean to ignite or lean enough to ignite, and burn at a too hot temperature. Lean is a funny thing...
