Removing old door protectors; paint concerns.

Hi all -
So I have my 2016 E350 (W212) for about a month now, and love the my new ride. I have a few things ordered to mod the car and will post them when all has been installed.

In the meantime... when I first purchased the car, the previous owner had installed these door protectors (see pics) on all 4 doors. They now seem very dirty and faded, and I have been wanting to remove them. I do think I will replace them with non-clear protectors in the future, but not immediately. Does anyone know if removing these items will have an affect on the paint beneath them? I don't want to just experiment and regret my decision. Seeking advise from ones that have had these and removed them.

Thanks!

Well that's dirt underneath, so there is a chance it's scratched or will be scratched when you remove.... you could try goo gone at the edges, and try to remove from a corner than is not dirty with a plastic razor blade....

I used to use them when removing vinylgraphics...

If there are scratches, you may be lucky and be able to buff them out with a good compound like Meguirs.....

I have these plastic overlays on my door edges and handle pockets, too. I believe they were dealer installed. Mine are not as grimy as yours, though.

Rather than remove them, I would first try a small amount of goo-be-gone in a test area to try to clean the gunk from the edges. If that removes the grime successfully, then you may not want to remove the strips entirely.

Let me add... when removing would not hurt to have a hose running a small stream of water on there while you peel it off...

I've masked off a few things and hit it with an airbrush filled with sand to sand blast a graphic on a surface, when peeling the mask we learned you have to spray water while peeling the mask off or the mask scratches the finish....

I think it’s best to steam them off like they do with paint protection films. Xpel, 3M, etc
they look horrible

The steam softens the material and adhesive and is the preferred method. My Shelby is having a section of Xpel replaced right now after being wanged by a huge piece of metal thrown at me by a semi.
