Exhaust / Cold Start

Vehicle: 2016 E400

I'm looking to modify the exhaust, purely for aesthetic reasons, but I don't want an annoyingly loud or intrusive sound. I absolutely love the sound of the E400's cold start tone and rumble, but once it's warmed up, its damn near silent. What would need to be done to keep that same rumble 24/7, but obviously make the cold start a tad bit louder as a result? Are there factory resonators that can be removed without affecting the emissions output?

My Sadie is a 2016 E400 Sport and I have not noticed that the exhaust note changes when the engine, and exhaust system, varies from cold to hot. It always has that pleasant little burble. Unless I ask a little more from her when she rumbles a little louder. It's not obtrusive, but she is louder and more noticeable in note than the luxury E350s friends drive. Those cars are very quiet.

I was on a conference call a few weeks ago while driving Sadie. While merging onto a fast moving highway on an uphill grade, she really started singing. The guys on the phone, most of whom are in Europe, asked, "Who is on a racetrack?" Pretty funny!

I’ll see if I can get a video once it cools off. Mine is noticeably louder and almost sounds like it’s cammed. But once it warms up, it’s dead silent

My 2016 E400 also has that pleasing cold-start exhaust burble. Love it. And you are correct, once the car warms a bit it quiets down dramatically.

Same 2016 e400 with the loud rumble on cold starts and sadly dims down as it warms up. Either way I am getting downpipes and a tune soon so should be much louder. I would probably just get a resonator delete/ x pipe for a louder sound.

Any mods you do after the cats will not effect emissions. The resonator on my car (2010 E550) is past my cats and I replaced it with an x-pipe, I've passed the California Smog test, which is notoriously strict, just fine.

Are you referring to the sound that your w212 is making in the following thread?

Just out of curiosity, did you allow for the higher idle RPM at cold start? Cold engine RPM is around 900 while warm engine is about 500. Have someone hold the RPM at 800-900 on your car once warmed to see if the note changes.
