When manufacturers make recommendations for certain mileage intervals, they are base on statistics, not individual use.
We sold our original ML320 at 130,000 miles still on factory fuel filter.
On diesels, filter usually is easier to access, so I tend to carry spare with me. Mostly I can do 4 times what factory recommends.
So do some evaluation. If you fill up at Shell, or Chevron only, your filter will last lifetime.
If you use gas cans from time to time, they are easier to contaminate.
Diesel leaves oil residue, so fuel nozzle might have some dust attached to it. Good to pay attention.
