Help installing alternator

Hi Team..

Hope you are all doing well.. and not totally freaking out a possible end of the world and enjoying the lovely marque that is MB!

I have been trying to re-install the alternator in my S212 E350 CGI and seem to have hit a snag...In the following photo (Ripped from Marks thread below)...
  • The problem is that the alternator at point A and what would be D are not sitting flush with the engine, meaning there is a slight gap between engine and alternator
  • Points B and C are flush, with no gap
  • The result is that the alternator pulley is at an angle, not good.
  • The reason that there is a gap at one side is that the bolts were literally as tight as could be and at one point I started to hear creaking when tightening..which I fear was a stripping thread or hopefully not cracking aluminium.
I am going to go at this again tomorrow and looking for tips on how I could install this properly? The only thing I can think of is that I tightened one side too much and as a result the unit was at an angle not allowing the other side to tighten.

Perhaps I need to tighten all four in a round robin style?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am just giving you some things to think about:

1. You say there are 4 bolts, are they all the same length? If not, do you have the bolts reversed? The bolts in the picture look too long to me.
2. If they are all the same length, are you missing some spacers that were remove originally?

Just my thoughts.

Was there any Loctite used on those bolts previously? Maybe it was replaced once before and they used Loctite. If so, you need to run those bolts in and out of the hole before trying to mount the alternator to clean them out.
Just a thought.

Looks like the alternator was installed at angle and bolts got cross-threaded.

He said that is a borrowed photo and not his alternator
