It's not a recall, but a service campaign bulletin. Meaning if a customer shows up at a dealer with these symptoms, this is how MB wants the dealer to fix it and MB will consider a goodwill reimbursement if the problem end up being fixed by the work prescribed in the service bulletin.

In the US, all service campaign bulletin are registered with NHTSA so you can search your VIN to see if it is covered. Usually a call to the dealer will accomplish the same. I don't know how it works in Canada or if they have the same service campaign system.

Good afternoon Gentlemen,

Just wanted to follow up, hope everyone is doing well with the Covid situation. @KEY08 @MBENZTECH @bzcat @nota_amg @LILBENZ230 @Arrie @DerekACS @nc211

I dropped my car today to be checked and they told me that the transfer case/transition is the problem not the engine mount.
He also said that they wanted to wait for the expert to know what is wrong he has to open the engine case to see whats wrong they said.

@MBENZTECH You had guessed that this was the case, For a 2012 4matic E350, have you seem this before and what is usually the issue/solution? Thank you in advance.

Have you gentlemen seen that issue before? I am hoping it's not a big deal cost and damage wise.

Common issue

Well, of course I have seen it. I have been specializing in Mercedes vehicles since 2006. If the vibration comes from the transfer case, there is a clutch pack/planetary gear set in the transfer case part of the transmission. It needs to be replaced. I have replaced a few but have seen the same issue within a year or so. Most dealers will try to sell you a whole transmission assembly.... which is a lot of money.

@MBENZTECH I read your bio, i wish i was in Texas to bring the car to you shop !

The mechanic looking at it said he has to wait for the transfer case specialist to answer what is wrong, i didn't really trust the place i dropped the car at except that they had 20 years experience working on MB.

How much approximately is it for the parts (part # ?) and how many hours of labour should i expect to be charged so that i don't get over charged (to have a basis) ?
I don't drive much so hopefully the new part will last (4-5k miles/year).

Thank you again for your help. I got the car from my father so it has a great sentimental value to me and can never get rid of it.

Pricing

I am not at the shop right now..... but let me give you some advise. If you end up repairing this transmission make sure that you get at least 2 years of warranty in writing. A lot of “European specialist” shops are always outsourcing transmission work. I do all repairs in shop.

@MBENZTECH Thank you very much, I'll wait for your price estimate tomorrow maybe (hoping if you will be in shop )

Yes he said they would outsource it when i asked about him doing it or when the tech was going to be in, that means ill either have to find a place myself i guess in Montreal or let him outsource it with the warranty, i guess ill find a different place if they refuse a warranty

Hi @MBENZTECH ,

I got a quote today from a transmission rebuilder who quoted me $2200-$2300 after discussing with him the repair.
He said it takes 11 hours to do the work, 7 of them to pull the transfer case out and putting it back and like 4-5 hours of rebuilding it.
He also said that it would be ideal since everything is out to replace the parts, one was 550$ something bearing i think plus other parts that its ideal to just get done since the transmission is pulled out. He also said he would warranty parts and labour 2 years

What do you think ? I think 7 or 8 hours to pull the transfer case box out seems high, what do you think ? I am in Canada btw

Thanks !

I don't know what they are quoting you. All I can tell you is that, if you car was at my shop for this vibration coming front the transfer case, all we were going to replace is the rear planet carrier which does not require the transmission to be removed and parts alone are like $700. Now if he is doing the rear planet carrier and all the transfer case bearings, that is a whole different story because the transmission needs to come out and the housing separated. So again make sure when you get your receipt is has all the part numbers and descriptions on it. I have seen shops rebuild a transmission and 5 months down the road it has an issue but it's not covered because the part was not replaced or listed in the receipt. Crazy stuff like that. Now the best choice would be to get a reman unit from the dealer but we are talking about a total of $9500 installed and program for one of those.

I have a 2012 E350 4matic that has 60k miles (91k km) in Montreal so snow and cold temperatures.
The car started vibrating and shaking when I turn the steering wheel whether at a stop or driving in both right and left directions.
I took it today to install the summer tires and did an alignment which helped a bit but the vibration is still there. (independent shop)
They told when inspecting that the car doesn't have a power steering fluid and the steering is electric. My brakes are at 50% but the pads are to be changed uneven ware next year. He didn't know what causes the vibration.

Anyone has any experience with that ?
I found this article online but I am not sure. I really appreciate all the help as I love this car and want to keep it.

I have always parked the car inside my garage but got caught over a weekend in a snow storm and the car was buried under snow so I don't know if that caused any issue.

Thanks again

You might try to deep clean the throttle body:

Or might replace the spark plugs:
