The Black & Decker (branded) charger he uses is exactly the same in form and function as the Stanley (branded) charger I have used. I have been told here not to use mine, but to use a trickle charger, instead. It's good to see a variety of opinions here. (I guess)
I wold vote against putting load tester with battery connected to the vehicle.
If the voltage drops too low and you accidently left the key in the ignition - you might loose rolling codes and need new key as the result.
Same with putting high-amp chargers on. Some of them can go > 15V and your car is not going to like it.
I have bunch of Harbor Freight maintainers on my toys. They are for $10 regural price, but I used to buy them for $5.
Still on my truck, who sits for winter months, I pull battery clamps for safety, but as side result - with battery disconnected your FSS stops counting, so you will not have to change your fresh oil only becouse time out.
I'm having to do the same thing with mine. Not enough driving and/or too many short trips, my battery died and I had to call AAA for a jump. It stays on the trickle charger now!
Last Thursday, I got the car out, drove to the nearest interstate, then made a 30-mile loop on the highways back to my house. Windows up, no stops, and the lack of regular traffic made the trip efficiently short.
I recon this woke up the car at least, got it to operating temps, and conditioned the battery enough to last another week or so. Not to mention getting some sunshine to burn the cobwebs out of my otherwise sequestered mind.
I now plan to do this driving procedure periodically (every week to 10 days). I'll wear a surgery mask on my face the whole time if I have to...
