Car engine temp quickly rises to 90C
On my newly purchased 2012E350 sedan, I noticed on a 70F day that the temp gauge showed the collant temp to quicly rise to 90C and in traffic would rise to 100C. Are these about normal for my car? My old 97 S300 would also rise to a bit over 80C.

First observe temperature with ECU reader and dash gauge is dummy gauge and you can't relay on it for troubleshooting.
No, such raise is not normal. When I drive mostly diesels, who take 5 miles at 90F outside to reach full operating temperature, I remember that gasoline engines were taking at least a mile in hot weather as well (70F for me is cold- jacket weather)
In case like that start with doing basic tune up.
-new filters
- new spark plugs
-checking the coolant and radiator for dirt.
