2012 E350 Temperature gauge issue

When i went out to my car to check the water/coolant level I also checked the tempterature gauge. Just sitting there cold at an ambient temp of 65F the car temp gage waas reading 40C (104F). So is the problem with the gage or with the coolant temperature sensor?
I have a standard ODB2 scanner. Will it work ok with the MB?
