Curious question : Your W212 wheel bolts, rounded or taper ?

Hi All,

If it is no bother, can anyone tell me ?...please

I am curious because my OEM rim/wheel is by Ronald. It uses rounded type bolt. Which R ( R12 or R13 or maybe R14 ), I have no clue.
My new BBS rim, CH-R model, Nurburgring Special Edition, comes with bolts and is using taper type or also called 60 degree cone.

I been spending days looking into various bolts spec and amazed at how much I do not know and how dangerous mistake can be , when and if you are into high speed driving using the wrong bolts type.
Wrong as in rounded vs taper, which unless one pay attention well, one may missed it.

Thanks
SP

W212 uses R14 heads.
Yours look kind of shallow. Here is picture of what I could find on the net.
Make sure new bolts go in with at least 6 turns.

Mercedes use center alignment for the wheels. The hole in the middle of the rim fits quite snugly to the hub and the bolts are kind of flat so they don't fight with the center alignment too much.

The tapered bolts are used to align the wheel by the bolts as after market rims normally do not align with the center hole. This is because they are normally made to fit number of different cars, not just Mercedes so the hole in the rim is bigger than with Mercedes rims.

I went thru this issue when I had American Racing wheels installed on my car. Balance was bad when they first installed with the OEM bolts. Re-balanced the tires and no difference. Next step was to install using tapered bolts. This helped but still had slight vibration with highway speeds.

The fix was to install centering rings in the wheels that align the wheels to the center shoulder on the hubs in the car. I highly recommend doing the centering rings as Mercedes cars seem to be very sensitive for correct alignment of the wheels to the hub.

Thank you K & Arrie....

I was also trying to figure out if OEM decides rounded or taper bolts as a technical choice or simply old time habit.
I think Arrie explanation why taper/cone bolts are choosen by aftermarket wheel maker makes so much sense on the centering bore part.

The 18" BBS rim/wheel I got comes with mercedes 66.5mm center bore ring adapter + bolts as Fitting Kit #0931151 for my ET47 offset
The rim/wheel itself is 82mm center bore before adding MB type 66.5mm center bore adapter. Its all proper and good as it has to get TUV approval.

I will do a complete write up when all done & nice. I have a little technical challenge to sort out.

Thanks again Gentlemen.
