4matic? I’d suspect either engine lifted or subframe dropped at minimum.
I should add, are you doing this job or simply questioning the mechanic? If your concerned get a second opinion and quote.

Do know which engine or have your VIN handy?
Sometimes, I have to remind myself of the variants worldwide, not just what we see here in the US. On the M272 and M273, at least, the oil pan is two-piece. The main part of the pan is aluminum and removing it would require lifting/supporting the engine and/or dropping the subframe. There's is a small steel pan bolted to the larger aluminum pan, which could be replaced fairly easily without removing anything.
Attached are the procedures for both "pans" of the 651 engine (non-4matic), if that applies to yours. There's more to them, but the gist is the engine needs to be raised in this case to remove the lower pan, which is quite large on this engine. I have not performed the procedure on this engine, so without seeing it I can't say for certain. However experience says, it's not a simple R&R. I'll gladly be corrected.
