Screen black

Hi to all, I’m new here and new to the Mercedes world, after recently purchasing a E250 ( believe to be w212 ) cdi 6 speed manual estate
when I arrived home found that the sat nav/radio/etc screen was black, when investigating and removing the screen found out that someone had been there before as screws missing.
now my question is
after purchasing a second hand one on eBay same part number etc which believe to be working out of a salvage car it is still black and blank, does it have to be coded to the car?
or any other ideas what the problem could be?
checked fuses, found that holding eject button would reset ( still nothing), even tried disconnecting the battery for 15 mins but still nothing
Any help really appreciated

It was working when you got the car, right?

This may sound silly, but check your main battery voltage. The command, is one of the first devices the car will turn off if the battery voltage is too low. Another, check, I assume you've tried pushing the ON button on the command?

Asking the forum, does the radio default when turning ON? What if you try raising the volume, pressing ON, raising the volume... just to see if you hear noise (hopefully a radio station) thru the speakers.

Really should pull codes, with a scanner that can decipher MB specific ones. Could be just a bad command unit and not the screen itself.

Many thanks for that
No it was not working when I purchased it
it has a new battery fitted so will check voltage but assume this will be ok
the radio will come on and the cd does play
