That'd be nice... like when I asked if some could check the airmatic module and provide the actuation current for the valve body solenoids

The switches are not interchangeable - I tried. I figure it has to do with going from halogen/xenon on the pre-facelift to LED headlights on the facelift models.

I haven't found anything that suggests the sensitivity is adjustable.
My '12 and '13 do not have an off position.

I believe you can swap out the switch without issues

As a tangent to my own thread, on the same 450 mile trip without racks or canoe my car gets 34 mpg, which drops to 28 mpg with OEM racks and canoe. So, here's a little known bit of MB trivia: Carrying a canoe will reduce your gas mileage by 17.6%.

Of course, that's specific to a Nova Craft Bob Special canoe. A wider or narrower canoe, or deeper or shallower canoe, would likely reduce the gas mileage more or less. Since I have 15 canoes and kayaks, I could develop an entire spreadsheet while in Covid hibernation.

But I think I'll pass, since I can't lift some of them anymore. That's why this newest one is on my low slung Mercedes instead of high aloft my traditional canoe camping beast.

2014 E550-sold 😩
Maybe sell one of the canoes to pay for extra halogen bulbs?
ok, that was a bad joke. You have a nice canoe collection there. Great way to see nature and have some fun. I live on a river with lots of kayaks, canoes and wildlife.

My light switch(2014) is identical to yours.

As long as the engine is running, switching to a standing lamp position just turns all lighting off. The illumination of one tail light does not happen unless the car is off.

My 2011 W204 didn't have an off position, either. I wonder if only the 2010s have the off position?

Me too, BMWpowere36m has two '11's now, he would know, basically it seems they made seven different cars in the 2010-2016 E classes, with some carry-over in the different model years with further delineations for Sport and Luxury.

2011 does not have a 0 position

So it seems the OP has an answer... just select a standing lamp position with the canoe aboard.

I have ILS coded on my 2012, and verified it works the same.

The dome probably has to do with the dashboard lighting control too. In my car the head lights normally come on first and then after lighting conditions inside the car gets dim enough the dash and command screen go to night mode. I always thought that dome sensor is the one behind this control. If not, then there must be yet another light sensor in the car.

The command lighting change I think is time based... as it never aligns with the auto ON headlight function.

I don’t think it is time based. Would make a big difference depending on how north the car is.

Stop that... I'm not the one with the yellow canoe on his Mercedes...

Besides, I think you'll need orange towels to test Comand switch timing, and my wife doesn't have any.

Either way you can't count time with towels...

I guess I own the only W212 with the 0 position switch. Actually I went on Autotrader and see 2010's with both configurations of switches. The must have changed them midyear 2010.

My NAV screen goes from light grey to black background with the windshield light sensor, about ten second delay, both dark and light with the headlights. Using the recommended orange towels. the center-dash and the rear view mirror light sensors had no effect covered or uncovered.

'13 with NTG 4.5

I think that you need to go back and try green towels.

In my area, Nissans are the ones that need these no-off-position switches. They are the worst offenders about driving at night with nothing but DRLs.

I don't really understand it in the Mercedes.

I have “OFF” position in my 2013 E550 and in the 2013 S550.

Interesting detail is that “OFF” position does not turn lights OFF. It seems working like AUTO position but I remember testing this once in my E and kind of remember that if I turn the DRL’s OFF then the “OFF” position turns the head lights OFF.

Tested my '12 with NTG 4, same result with green towel, I think BMW is right though, NAV screen not at the same sensitivity as headlights, I believe.LOL.
