Walnut blast M278?

I am thinking of getting my M278 E550 walnut blasted. Saw this video of a M157 E63
, and the intake valves looked caked on.

Thoughts?

maybe if the engine was out for a major rebuild or something, but to pull it just to clean it? you can't even SEE the engine block under all the plastic.

Gotta love direct injection, that engine had some fatal issues though.

It sure did. It was modded with ARP studs on it. Which caused the rods to the piston and scar the cylinder.

In your case the intake manifold would come off, but not the engine. In my case the intercooler would have to come off, but not the engine. The engine came off of that one because of the aftermarket ARP studs failure.

You absolutely should get the valves walnut blasted. The valves on all direct injected engines need to be cleaned periodically to clean off buildup.

so that requires removing the heads and replacing the head gaskets. how often are you suggesting we need to do this?

Unless I'm seriously misunderstanding the setup of the M278, all you should need to do is pull the intake manifold off and the valves will be easily visible. You're blasting the top of the valve, not the portion that's inside the combustion chamber.

Not the same vehicle or engine, but this provides a good high-level understanding of the procedure.

Edit: I did some looking around and it sounds like Mercedes' PCV system works pretty well at keeping oil out of the air so you may never "have" to do it, but if it were me I'd be checking the valves at every 50k miles to see how they look. If they're clean enough, you're probably safe just leaving it alone.

The same goes for the M276 too, since it's also direct injected.

They have blasting/vacuum adapters which allow cleaning on car... I've seen them for BMWs. Like Atraudes linked in the FCP blog. Basically the intake manifold comes off, cylinder on which your cleaning is brought up on TDC (compression stroke, valves closed), adapter fitted, blast walnut media into runner while simultaneously vacuuming out debris... repeat for remaining cylinders.

I think it's probably a good idea, especially after seeing those pictures, I may do this at the second spark plug change. {have this done}

OK, I'm convinced. I'll do this when my engine has 300,000 miles on it. For sure.

I like the "Italian tune-up" idea. Just have to spend a hour or so in the mountains in "S" mode once in awhile, otherwise this thing spends way too much time under 2000 rpm.

and/or manually downshift... I used to de-carbon my Jetta by driving on the freeway in 3rd which put it up around 4500 rpm at the speed limit.
