2016 E350 and trying to get CarPlay
Do the OBD port things work or will it mess up my 2016 Benz E350 4MATIC Sedan
I got quotes from $1,000 - $2,000 in my area from audio shops and thought it was a rip off so now I'm looking at this specifically: https://mbenzcoder.com/ but I don't wanna ruin my entire system and not sure if I could revert it.
FYI I don't have a warranty

The OBD dongle works fine and there are couple different sources for it. It’s simply ‘unlocking’ factory features that are already installed in the radio.
One caveat: you need to ensure that your 2016 has both the correct physical Comand unit installed and the correct firmware installed. Thus, you may need to pay a dealer to update the Comand unit prior to using the OBD if you don’t have the correct firmware.
There are multiple threads here that should provide the specific info you need.
And yes, $1K to $2K is ridiculous.

Also, 1-2k is ridiculous but that was the quote everyone in my city was offering. What's a reasonable amount?

The most comprehensive discussion about this is this one. Skip past the first 80 posts or so...

Although the title is about Android Auto, the Apple Car Play upgrade works exactly the same and has the exact same hardware/firmware requirements. A dealer will have to confirm if you have the last firmware update for your MY2016. The thread details all the fun involved in getting this dealer install done. That single trip to the dealer may be the only expense you need (beyond the price for the dongle).

if you buy the dongle from vladimircdi on ebay, you can send him your VIN, he has access to the mercedes database which will detail what flashware (mercedes name for firmware) has been installed on each module, and he will tell you if you need the upgrade. https://www.ebay.com/itm/262451909947 .... oof, price has gone up, it was $179 in December. it says ships from Belarus, but mine shipped from Canada and was here (California) in a couple days.
I'm pretty sure *ALL* 2016 W212's need the firmware upgrade. mine was made in 3/2016 and needed it on 2 of the 3 related components.

just because you have the carplay volume setting on the dealer menu, and just because you have High_CY15_9, does NOT mean you have the latest firmware.....
