Auto lights sensor location

Leave switch in Auto position. I park in garage so they come on automatically whenever I turn the car on, but sometimes they never go out even in bright sunlight. If I park the car and turn it off for a while and then start again they will not come on. I can turn them Off (see below), but then once I change back to Auto they often come on even in sunlight. Sometimes they won't go off even if in Off position.
My car has the older type light switch with an Off, Auto, Parking, and Lights. I contacted the dealer and M-B a couple years ago about another problem I was having with lights and M-B refused to do anything - past the seven year warranty. The dealer service manager finally agreed that since I had reported malfunctions during the seven year period, he would replace the light switch. BUT with the understanding that if anything remotely connected with the switch, lights or installation happened, they would NOT fix it. An offer I could refuse.
Thanks.

So, brings up the question. What is the small dome on the center of dashboard for?

It's probably me and/or advancing age, but I noticed a couple of years ago that the system seems to shoot out a lot more cool air from the top vents than in the past, or appears to. Especially in Fall and Spring. I generally now run them about 3/4 open. Then again, I have always wanted more heat or cool on my legs than face and chest anyway. Operate it on Auto about 98% of the time.
Thanks again!
