Get one while you can
Thanks. Breaks my heart.

I have an M113k sitting on a shelf in the garage. Guess I'll start getting serious about picking up an M278 to store next to it.

My 2010 E550 has 181000 miles on the clock. I change oil every 5000 miles and I have never seen this engine oil level go down between changes. If the engine oil has been changed at least by the schedule the 71k miles is low for it. Also depends on if the car was a city driver or if it was mostly on highway. Personally I look for 4-5 year old cars with very high mileage because it means most miles came from highway and you can divide the miles by 4 to get the engine mileage compared to city driven car. High mileage brings price down as it does for the engine miles.

Also, transmission rotates “straight thru” when at highway speeds so no gear wheel wear happens either.

But, it depends so much on how the car was maintained.

I made the move

I moved from an E350 to an E550. It’s a whole different universe! From v6 to V8 and adding two turbos, you get a 402 HP factory rated engine that is more like 425HP. Stock torque is about 430Ft Lbs! But then…
a quick trip to RennTech Mercedes in Stuart FL (45 min drive for me) and they reprogrammed the ECU to yield a Dyno proven 560HP and 713Ft Lbs of Torque! The car is truly a beast, even with stock exhaust no high flow cats or custom down tubes. RennTech is one of the world’s top MB tuners, has its own motor sports team, campaigning cars in all the major races. Serious knowledge and capabilities.

Now here,s the interesting part: RennTech has developed a device that plugs into your OBD2 port and will modify your state of tune to generate numbers pretty close to mine. (About 540HP/704TQ) AND you can plug it back in and return to factory tune any time. Visit www.renntechmercedes.com and click on Products and then sort for your vehicle.

The 550’s are hard to find because for every 10 E350 vehicles built, MB built one E550.

Good luck on your search.

My wife and I changed from E350's for many years to a 2014 E550 and there is no comparison in the ride! The engine is amazing. It only has 35K on it, loaded, no airmatic, and hanging on to it.
