It was serviced, but young owner did not know how to reset it and did not learn how to use scanners.
When transmission went into limp, I bought car for peanuts, when the repair took $10 pilot bushing and some ATF.
R can correspond to the coolant, which has some ridiculous life like 10-15 years 120-150k odo depending on what Mercedes was smoking that year (Mercedes has just called it lifetime, maybe they hate doing coolant service)
If your coolant looks good, is a fairly vibrant blue, you're more than likely ok. If it's a little mucky looking it might be time for a drain and fill, as the rust inhibitors start expiring and that can lead to wear. I like using ROWE coolant concentrate I just mix in a paint bucket.
It ran low from a fairly simple output shaft seal on one side, we did both, fixed a torn CV boot, but apparently he must have done some miles on low fluid because as soon as we sealed that up, the front pump seal just exploded (which usually permanently damages the race it sits on and usually that spells torque converter seal which is internal, and a $9 output shaft seal turned into a $500 used trans and another 6 hours of labor.
You got lucky!
