Okay, the CARABC and reverse camera install are done, and the camera install was a little tricky but not difficult. I used a relay capacitor between the camera and reverse light wiring (this one, actually:
), and have gotten no errors or issues with operation. I do need to see about adjusting the camera angle slightly, but that part is on me for not getting dialed in well before closing everything up. I have noticed that my phone will sometimes randomly connect to CarPlay when my car is not on and I am not even in my car - my office is right above our garage. It can be annoying, but overall I am really pleased with the outcome. The total install for the camera and CARABC unit ran me about $200, because I purchased a returned CARABC unit from amazon (got lucky, I guess!). I would recommend this upgrade to anyone who wants to keep all the OEM components, including steering wheel controls and factory screen. The only function that is lost is the factory navigation, which CarPlay does a better job with anyhow. I would recommend using t-taps for the camera, and connecting the negative wiring directly to ground rather than tapping into the reverse light wiring directly, as one walkthrough that I watched mentioned the possibly of overheating at the wiring harness when connecting directly to positive. Definitely a project worth the money and time. Now on to replacing my interior driver door handle. Ugh.
