the standard 18" size on a W212 is 245/40R18 XL ... a 225/40 will be significantly less outer diameter, and throw off stability control, ABS, etc.

no idea, never seen a E220 here. what size wheels and tires did your car come with ?

lets see, a 225/40R18 XL has a OD of 25.2" and 825 revs/mile, and a load rating of 92
a 255/35R18 XL has a OD of 25.1" and 830 revs/mile

the standard 18" wheel on that car, 245/40R18 XL is 25.9" and 804 revs/mile, and has a load rating of 97
guessing you have 17" wheels, 245/45R17 XL and they are 25.7" and 810 revs/mile, load rating 99

(all numbers from Michelin Pilot AS 4, but any other major brand tire should be virtually the same)

Why do you want to run such small tires on such big wheels ? short sidewall tires greatly increase the probability of getting pinch flats and bent rims from pavement defects, and they harshen the ride significantly as they require higher air pressure to support the same weight.

ah, the standard 'staggered' size on a W212 sedan is 245/40R18 XL front, 265/35R18 XL rear.
