TOYOTA threw in the towel with film strength with 0w-16. It instead contains 600+ppm of moly for boundary protection in lieu of film thickness.

I'm using Mobil Delvac 15w-40 for my 3.5 DI over summer. I just got the car, with unknown OC so for $11 a gallon,it was a pretty easy choice. It runs super-smooth.

As for the Quaker State....sure. They have a 5w-40 now, with generic Euro specs. I use a lot of 10w-40 in my non-turbo cars, the high miles formula ideally. in Europe, 10w-40 has mfg specs. Since it costs a royalty fee to put the spec on the bottle, we see less spec oils here.

Remember that most specs overlap or are duplicative. 229.5 is the top spec for our purposes. MB def does NOT need spec oil. Look at HD 5w-40 like Rotella and the track record it has. Delo 5w-40 is great too, easily can replace your Mobil 1 5w-40

I would say Mobil 1 High Miles 5w-30 is about the best choice, in part for the seal conditioning. It's a thick 30 that can meet Euro specs.

Non turbos can tolerate a thicker starting visc in winter, like 10w-40 or 5w-40, but a turbo engine needs a thinner cold visc for flow to the turbo bearings, like a 0w-40 or even thinner 5w-30. Since a buffer is built into the Euro specs for sustained high speed Autobahn driving, we can get away with 5w-30 in wintertime with low wear and improved mpg, especially for short trip driving. Otherwise 0w-40 for turbos or cold, other viscs for summer or non turbos. If you drive really short trips, 5w-30 works best if it stays under freezing for a month or two.

You are the best judge of your own driving, engine climate and visc. To think the same oil for granny driving 2 miles to church in Minnesota winter is the best oil for AMG on the track in +100F, it's absurd on it's face.Well, MB has to recommend one single oil for all conditions, as per EPA and mfg criteria, so we get 0w-40, a middle of range visc grade. I wish I could convince more people to try 15w-40 HD on one end, and 5w-30 on the other end. I do 6 month changes, so switching visc for summer and winter is just part of the process..

Something I learned...

I'm a big fan too of the Lubrizol spider web showing a manufacturers oil specification performance profile and one of the reasons I use VW 504.00 507.00 in a Mercedes !

But on the flip side a poorer profile spec can be for no reason except just because they can be beyond that spec and have outstanding anti wear capability .

But how do we know ?

Thankfully a mechanical engineer who researched tribology tested over 230 oils .

Some people really need to ditch the overly thick gloop .

What was that test conducted on, a Timken wear scar rig, not in actual engines, right? You know, Prell shampoo shows even lower wear than these oils. Is that "conclusive" of anything? Not really, but it does indicate the additives are making the difference.

You might want to take a look at Pennzoil Euro L 5w-30. It has BMW LL and MB 229.51, the corresponding mid-saps spec to VW 504, without the extra cost of the VW504
licence fee. One of the rare bargains on the market.

Lubrizol here in Cleveland was my first job after school forty years ago, great Cleveland company, one of the owners is an investor in my alcohol plant, Timken is 40 miles south, also a good family.

Oh nice. When I shop for spec oil, I don't have much preference. Only specialty oils like Mobil 1 High Miles sets the brands apart.

I have a ton of Valvoline SynPower here, using it in the wife's new RAV4. M1 HM for my W164 ML 350, lots of Rotella 5w-40 etc etc. I buy on sale, then figure out the best car for it later....

Paid like $2 a gallon.

I would say the catch is where the mfg specifics some thin oil for EPA MPG, then the engine gets driven hard, and excess wear is the result. TOYOTA 0w-16 is so awesome, the manual contains a warning against driving too fast on it.

So it's not good to over generalize, and make blanket statements.

Plato knew which oil to use 2500 years ago when he said, The highest good is in the mean": That is, not the thinnest, not the thickest, someplace inbetween.

This is worth a look.... https://translate.google.com/transla...com/27699.html
