Aha M271.8 EVO engine.
This engine computer ( ECM ) is older version where the ignition driver for all 4 coils are inside the ECM. And yes, those drivers will fail eventually and new ECM is the solution.
To be sure it is the ECM, your mechanic must have a scope. Better if it is the 4 channels one and not 2 channels like what I had back then.
