Motor stumbles when pressing the accelerator around 2000 to 3000 rpms

It seams like intermittently I have a dead spot on the accelerator pedal around 2000 to 3000 rpms. When in that range the engine to stumbles or when you press and hit 3000 rpms the car pushes the rpms back to 1800. If I push the pedal a number of times it will work again. Can a bad accelerator pedal cause rough or stumbling engine? Can a bad accelerator pedal push the rpms down?

What engine type, VIN, what have you done to troubleshoot?
