In Louisiana gasoline tax is $0.20/gallon. How much of it goes to maintaining roads I do not know.
We pay lots of sales tax at 10.5%. It really hurts if you buy a new vehicle, and you also pay this 10.5% if you bring your car with you when you move in this state. You first paid your sales tax wherever you lived and bought the car but when you move to Louisiana you pay the sales tax again based on the book value when you first register it. And that really sucks.
Like some other states yearly inspection is $18 and registration renewal around $60-$70 depending on what you drive.

Dingo,
Have taxi and MTR rate gone up in HK ?
I have not been to HK in like 3 years now.
And what is the ongoing monthly parking lease for those people in apartments but have to lease parking on stand alone parking buildings ?
Not Causeway bay region price, say a typical out of city but not too rural ?
5 years ago it was like US$500 a month on quite a rural side of HK I seen the banner

Yes, 115% tax rate is really high, Parking fees are about the same in NYC, but we don't have that kind of tax rate on new cars, wow. I can't even imagine paying tax on my car yearly here in the states, that's crazy stuff!

Things here in Kentucky are simpler.
Register with County Clerk in county of residence. $25 plate fee, with added fee for a special or vanity plate like my U S Army Korean War Veteran plate.
6% sales tax on first registration, new or used, with credit for original tax if transfer from another state.
Ad valorem property tax calculated annually by state. Possibly a credit on next renewal due to jump in car values.
So far, no EV tax.

The registration tax is insanely high here in Hong Kong, a friend of mine just bought a Porsche 992 Targa4 gts, he paid US$450,000 for it.

WOW, that's all i say but i will give you some numbers from Portugal but first: the "normal" roads are crap, potholes, lack of pavement etc. etc. so if you want a (kind of) good road to drive on you have the toll roads that are VERY VERY expensive. You can't get in or out of the country without paying toll..... Nice no?? Then there are the taxes. But first registration very cheap for any passenger car is about 65€ so not so bad........ Now comes the worst depending of the car and its engine you pay between 200-800€ annually for just having a car, depends also on you CO emissions so things can get out of hand if you want a big engine. Then you pay more taxes with your insurance, gas/diesel and other "inventions" they made over the years. Ok, you get on the (crappy) roads and if you just speed up a bit there are "hunters", they will give you a nice piece of paper that starts at paying minimum 120€ and you will loose at least 3 points (max 12) ......... This is oneway for the goverment to get more money from the cars, estimated for this year in fines: 350M € !!!!!
This is one of the reasons that diesel cars are abundant and you will find that lower cc engines will "only" pay around 200€/year. A W212 with a 2.2L engine pays around 250€ if you want to do it BIG (E350) 800€/year, gas engines are lower taxed but not by much. Electric don't pay the yearly tax but are f***** at the charging stations paying for connection, charging and the amount of electricity (YES, if you "forget" your car and it's charged they bill you by the minute)....... Now Diesel is about 2€/L, 95 is about 2.20€/L so a lot of 100 horse or less, underpowered vehicles are used and accidents due to overtaking is a daily thing since the roads are crap, lots of hills, mountains etc. etc. things can get scary. For all of you that wants to use their own car the only thing that applies is the toll roads but beware if you go over the speed limit you will have to pay on the spot and they don't forgive 1Km/H over it....... Shops and parts are expensive (doesn't matter what car/brand) and labour per hour starts at around 50€ at indys and goes up to 100+€ at dealers. And all this with a minimum wage of 700€/month!!!!!
It was a nice place for holidays but things are though, everything went up 150% due to the excuse of COVID, now there is a war and next is monkeypox this is getting out of hand and it's only a matter of time that there will be another crises.
So having a car is worse than having a wife, a lover and a dog all together but it's something you need otherwise you have to walk.

Yes, I worked in Porto on a wine project, since I knew Madrid well, I flew into there and drove to Porto, Lots of small cars! As an example, I saw 3 series BMW's but no 5's or 7's same with Benz's, all C's and A's no E's or S's at all other than Hotel cars. But Portugal makes up for that with gorgeous countryside and awesome little towns! I can barely manage Spanish and zero Portuguese, but everyone was very friendly and understanding, I love that region.
