722.9 teach in process

Hello, can somebody please offer some assistance with the teach in procedure, our problems started when the engine and gearbox were removed to replace the timing chain and guides, as this was done in my spare time it did take around 6 months. Now we have an error code stating the gearbox needs to be “taught in” but I cannot seem to achieve the pre requisites see photos below. Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated. I am using Star software and C4 multiplexer

I think best you get a professional to help you.
Taught-In is usually for WHEN and IF new components of tranny get replaced. It is not the same with ADAPTATION.

Perhaps this may help, but do be careful because if any wrong step which can "un-marry" your tranny module to other modules, it will be painful to learn.

I am sorry to say this :
Your Xentry shows car battery voltage at 12.6V , this alone shows you do not have the experience to work to this level as you never bothered to do the most basic of the needs.
Never never have below 12.8V, if the command you request to the modules are critical ones.
If you have doubt, use professional service is a safer bet.

Thanks for taking to time to reply, I did notice the voltage on the scanner, which I did think was odd as the battery is new and reading 13.8 volts on a multimeter. And I could not find any cause for the voltage drop. Unfortunately the local Mercedes have declined to assist as I did the engine maintenance myself. Could the second battery in the boot be giving the low reading? That did meter out at around 12.6, if the engine is started the voltage goes up to 14.4 on the scanner as soon as the alternator kicks in. But the voltage on the scanner does not rise if a battery charger is connected.

regards Chris.

Hi Chris,

I do not have a C4 , so I am lacking knowledge how it usually reads voltage. I am using Xentry Passthru version and a naughty one too hahahaha.
However, anything that connects to the car OBD2 port, that is battery voltage from Rear SAM but from MAIN battery in engine bay and it will be at lowest 0.2V less than battery, due to its own voltage drop....if UNLOADED.
The small trunk battery , ECO-Start-STOP one has nothing to do with any reading on your C4, no worry.

Our battery during a Xentry/STAR scanning is sucked down by all modules by approx 12-15 amps and without a battery maintainer, the battery will read at the battery post
approx 12.5 - 12.6V for the first <20 minutes of scanning and will go lower to 12.3 - 12.4V within one hour without a 20 amps battery maintainer.
If you are using Cetrek 5A battery charger, it is not enough amperage. Also you do not want any bigger battery charger than 8Amps if possible, too offensive.

This is the nature of our battery being only 90Ah at best. Put a load pass 10 amps, it will never show its full 12.8 - 12.7V anymore.

The longer the C4 cable is to the OBD2 port, it will read even lower battery voltage at the C4, well extra resistance.
I use a 30 amps battery maintainer ( 12-15 amps usual output ) and on purpose pump out only 13.2 volts at power maintainer and at battery post it will be 12.9V at best and LOADED.
This way I do not put any NET amperage into the battery, I only provide what is taken by modules.

I do not have the experience doing TAUGHT-IN procedure, because I never have to, never replaced anything needing that level of "programming". Touch wood.

I can only advice :
01. Make sure there is no DTC related to modules within the operational links/function to the tranny. If DTC exist, it may cause the problem you have.
02. Battery voltage as described earlier, keep it 12.8V minimum.

03. Make sure you wire harness interconnect is all good and your are not missing the ground/s, the big ground cable that goes to the tranny bell housing near starter.
04. Do check all grounds to car body or those to engine block regions. You had your engine and tranny OUT right ?

If you are able to video the TAUGHT-IN process menu, it will help those in the forums who may want to contribute their know-how. I never dared to enter that menu ....
I just notice your engine is diesel OM651.... missed that.

Thanks again, I’ll check this out at the weekend when I’m home again. If all fails I’ll just book a ticket to Stuttgart find a Mercedes design engineer and punch him in the face! Only in my mind of course.

regards Chris

Don't think MB programmers do have engineering degree.
I think they smoke their breakfast as I have several issues with logics on those cars.
As for your problem Deplore is DSL guru, but was scared away from this forum.
He is still active on benzworld, so try to repost it there, or PM Deplore directly.
