Removing Service Reminder

Got tired of the service reminder popping up every time I started the car so got some instructions from our favorite source here.
The factory instructions were written by German engineers to explain a very complicated (to me) process. Anyway I tried them and failed, then went back and studied them more thoroughly. First steps were to raise hood all the way up & close it. Then open and close trunk and open and close door. Then I tried my more specific instructions and it worked. Had a step for select type oil used, but that didn't come up for me.

In 1975 I purchased the cheapest car Datsun (Nissan) made - a B210. It had a service reminder light that came on at 5,000 miles if I remember correctly. You opened the hood, found the little metal box on the sidewall, removed the rubber plug, used a screwdriver to push on the counter inside and it reset to zero. Put the plug back and close the hood.

25 years later and the "German technology" requires a really lengthy and confusing process.

No, it just requires going into the service menu. The process is well documented here on this forum and is done completely from the driver's seat.

A modest japanese car Datsun had a service reminder at that time ? That's the most amazing thing I have ever heard recently
As you said, it's German Technology , they like to overengineer everything

I had a 1977 Toyota Celica that had a service menu built into the center console; a button would scroll through the items and another would reset.

I won't be surprised to hear another 70's Japanese car maker owner preferably A Honda owner would also say the same thing at all

When I tried from the seat, couldn't get past step 5. Tried several times and when I did Steps 1 and 2 per the M-B instructions, it worked. Steps 1 and 2 are the opening and closing. Perhaps they are there as safety precautions? But they are there.
Thanks all for comments and now I know how to do it in 12 months. Car will be "only" 14 years old then and probably have less than 50,000 miles on it.

OK, just found a couple of YouTube instructions on how to do it. Much simpler than trying to follow the translated German Official instructions. I'm thinking the opening & closing thing may actually occur when the car is being serviced rather than just for resetting the reminder? Also, my car was built in Oct/Nov 2009 and has some older items on it. For instance, the light switch actually has an OFF button.
