350 CDI BlueTec vs BlueEFFICIENCY.

Gents ! I'm pretty close to buy a used 350 CDI BlueTec from 2010 (2011 model). Fully loaded - 320.000 km.

I'm wondering what's the difference between the BlueTec are BlueEFFICIENCY ?

Besides a rather big difference in the specs for the same engine.

Blutec have less horsepower and torque - is it possible to adjust the engine control module or whatever, so it will perform as the BlueEFFICIENCY engine?

Otherwise any things to be aware about? The car have full Mercedes Benz dealership service.

Bluetec=diesel
Blueefficiency = gasoline
The OM642 diesels are higher maintenance engines, so before you pay for it, check the oil cooler status.

No, that's not correct - both diesel engines in the 350 CDI are listed as BlueTec and Blueeffiviency, depending on what year, there in Europe. But thanks for your info regarding the oil cooler.

Have never seen Bluefficiency model in USA, so don't know if they exist here, but plenty of Bluetecs. All are diesels.

Is the difference in bluetec vs blueefficiency the difference of having a DEF injection system with SCR? In the US anyways most diesels with just DPF use more fuel and much more EGR recirc. The DEF injected ones use less fuel, have a little more power, and besides the DEF related equipment the emissions usually last longer.

Not sure as in the US bluetec seems to be the diesel with all emissions while the CDI was diesel pre exhaustive emissions.

I have a 2012 S550 Bluefficiency Model. I'm not sure what this all means but I think the smart battery charging is part of it, i.e., it does not put full charging power on when engine pulls the car. It does it when you slow down when kinetic energy is freely available.

My 2010 E550 charging works the same way but the car does not have the Bluefficiency badge like my S does. It could have been removed though by the first owner...?

google is your friend
I still doubt any Blueefficiency car will beat the 60mpg my Bluetec can make.
