Smile E300 vs E500

Hello there,

I'm considering buying a W212 the pre-facelift model.

However, I'm confused about buying an E300 V6 or an E500 V8.

In terms of reliability, ownership, and driving experience, which one is better?

With similar suspension options, i.e. Airmatic, both cars will have the same "driving experience" at the same speeds. However, if we are talking about the "from the line/still experience", "accelerating experience" or "passing another car experience", 1000% with you, is not even fair to put both in the same sentence.

If you have option to go with the bigger engine this is what you want to do. The six jug engine is way too small for this heavy car that all bimmers and audis will want to race with.

Do yourself a BIG FAVOR. Buy to one with the big motor.

Maintenance wise V6 should be easier and M278 is more complex but nothing is like a twin turbo V8 to me .

OP didn't mention specific model years though.

Pre facelift could be M272 vs M276 (for the E300) and M273 vs M278 (for the E500).

Or whether it has airmatic or not, standard in some years and optional in others. Airmatic is more expensive to fix than the regular suspension in an E300/E350.

All this muscle car talk... 300hp in the M276 engine (V6) is more than plenty to run this car. When buying a used car of this type (likely on its 2nd or 3rd or 4th owner at this point), I would look for low mileage as the first consideration, and then a subjective assessment whether it has been thrashed by the HP obsessed. Less likely for the V6 model.

Well 302hp in the 2012-2016 lift models. The E500/E550 in the US had a few more standard features like real leather, heated and cooled seats and airmatic was optional in some years. Also they tended to be more loaded, easier to find the P2 package with the Bixenons and keyless go/Active LEDs than the more base model E300/E350s.

But I guess it also depends on the area, I always wanted the E550 but there's so much traffic around here that you can't really make use of it. Also for foreign countries that have the E500 instead of E550 in the US, the W212 has the rear subframe rusting that's covered by an extended 20 year warranty in the US, but that's only for the US market, other markets might not have it, would depend on the country. More likely to find that in an older model vs a newer one. And of course there's also the faded wood trim issue, but really just cosmetics.
