M276.8** 3.0 Turbo - Some document and xentry "errors" to note

Gents,

01. If we use the introduction booklet because it is easy and nice to read, these are errors in them when compared to official WIS document:
VVT variable timing range for Intake , intro booklet wrote -4 to +36 degrees. WIS wrote -7 to + 33 degrees.

Intro booklet

.
WIS

When using Xentry real life test on the road.

I am not well versed with timing stuff, but I am not seeing any up to -7* degree command ( 7* before TDC ) at the intake.

OIL VALVE NORMAL MEANS NOT DEFEATED - As is untouched

The +33 degrees is true

So the WIS is the correct one if for the +33 degrees. WIS wrote -7 to + 33 degrees. Intro booklet wrote -4 to +36 degrees
But the intro booklet seems more accurate by stating -4 degree, since -3 degree command and actual -4 degree is the highest I seen..... ha ha ha ha.
But must ask timing expert on this -3 degrees dispute. Both docs is pointing to maximum 40 degrees of variable timing.

This excel file is from Xentry when we do the 120 seconds VVT test. It is in German. Original wordings are below :
I use Google translate, no choice.

This is the test in Xentry

WARNING - I can only use Benz Ninja Xentry with the recommended fast C4 to get this fast data of VVT 120 seconds test and accurate.
Do not use the slower Open Port 2.0 PassThru Xentry, even genuine Tactrix which I have, it is too slow and will produce errors, as such you think your VVT is not functioning properly.

02. In WIS wiring and in intro booklet, the turbo boost controller is called Y31/5.
When you go to Xentry to test, it is still using the older name of Y77/1. M157 seems to use Y77/1 component name.

.

.

Also do not be fooled by Xentry stating specified value as 70% to 90% , while actual is 45% in RED.
Full explanation to why Xentry specified value is misleading is in the video below , when and if engine is not under turbo boost, example idling:

===============

03. Intro booklet in M276 3.0 Turbo or M278 and even M157 will called the CHARGE AIR COOLER CIRCULATION PUMP as M44, that is wrong.
Under WIS and wiring information it is called M45. The key is to recognize the K60 relay powering it next to it in wiring diag, and do not be confused by the other smaller coolant circulation pump
which is called M13/5 for HVAC Heater Core extra circulation.

M13/5 albeit it belongs to HVAC use, its command and power is from Rear SAM, look at sheet 7.
.

Yes, the name is also COOLANT CIRCULATION PUMP for M45, they should add CHARGE COOLER COOLANT CIRC PUMP so that less confusion.
M44 does not exist in W212 .
K60 power relay is commanded by ECM negative switched and powered by ECM Fuse 22 front SAM. The power for M45 pump ( via relay pin 30 ) comes from Rear SAM fuse 46 (USA) or fuse 87 (other region ).

M278 on left side image. .M157 on right side image.

==================

.

This could also apply to M276 3.5NA or perhaps M278 and M157 where the MED177 ECM is being used. Non M276.8 engine, please verify yours.

04. The R48 thermostat heater.
In Xentry you can see Duty Cycle in % to show the working status of this R48 heater to speed up mechanical thermostat opening.
Howver, please note that the Duty Cycle % in Xentry is opposite of true electrical value or command by ECM to the R48 heater.
So when Xentry displayed 100% , that means there is zero power to the R48 heater yes....yes...yes.
If Xentry displayed 20%, it means 80% duty cycle or power is actually sent to the R48 heater....LOL....yes yes yes.

When Xentry shows 100% for R48 Heater, it actually send nothing at all. No power sent out.

.
At 0% duty cycle of R48 heater in Xentry, the ECM does not send PWM signal anymore, it is a direct system voltage which is equal to 100% power ,
see left side DMM at 13.36V. The right side DMM is no more showing Duty Cycle. Xentry is showing 0% R48 heater.

When Xentry is showing R48 heater at 82%, that means the R48 heater only get 18% duty cycle, as seen at right side DMM 18.38% duty cycle at 140Hz.
The voltage on left side DMM is then only 2.4 volts ( with scope it will be full system voltage , with hill and valley PWM )

So when one is troubleshooting R48 heater activation by ECM, do remember this OPPOSITE value.
I don't understand why the MED 177 or Xentry is doing/showing this. I hope no one condemn an ECM when this condition is assumed as a fault.

You should post a warning not to read your post until you've had a 2nd cup of coffee!!!!

Looks like some copy-n-paste errors. Bottom line, refer to XENTRY and not a marketing brochure.

(P.S. -- Good job!)

Xentry has its own quirks too, not super correct all the time.

I guess MB software guys tasked for the Xentry, do copy and paste too from their older ECM models or older programs and/or the true engineers from Bosch MED177 team and
MB in-house mechanical team did not sit down all together with the Xentry software boys often enough....hence we see totally avoidable mistake like R48 Heater data out
or how the data should be displayed correctly.
