Smashed window

Anyone have a ballpark of the cost to fix this?
Looks to be just the glass.
Tint is holding it together
Deciding if worth filing claim or just diy

Yes first glass guy I spoke to said it was $2799 for the glass and the install so I figured I would ask on here.

Are those US dollars?

That's just stupid.

Glass breakage should fall under your comprehensive insurance. Don't know what your deductible is, but it will be less than replacing it yourself. And, it should not affect your rates.

(Please don't tell us that you just carry the mandatory liability insurance, and don't have collision or comprehensive. Or that you have some ridiculously high deductible.)

Not sure if this is the right or left, but the price should be close. Your glass guy was charging a hell of a lot for labor.

Thanks, I have good insurance. I have a 500 deductible. Unfortunately I had a total loss last year so I'm hesitant to file another claim. If I can fix it myself or through a cheaper place then I'll try that.

Yes 2799 usd in Bellevue Washington. Land of the expensive car and home of the homeless

$2799 for a door glass replacement!!! That's absurd! I'd expect absurd to be at $1000, not 2799!

I never understand why people carry such high deductibles when the price difference is usually negligible. I once compared the difference between a $50 and a $250 deductible for comprehensive and it was less than $10 per month with my insurance. What's the cost to lower your deductible. Also, glass breakage should not raise your rates like collision might. Of course, each insurance company is different.

Go somewhere else, look online for parts prices to educate yourself, WA mechanics generally feed on the uninformed. Well should say they either try to rip you off or are completely clueless on how to work on things.

That price seems insanely high. We just had a windshield installed and our GLS with OEM glass and it was less than that quite a bit less

There must be specialized auto glass shops nearby. See what their price is. One of those is likely who your insurance company would send you to.

I always get glass coverage with 0 deducible. Over time probably lose a windshield or side glass like that every 5 years or so. Last time I had one replaced it was about $300 with insurance but that was years ago. You basically have to call around. Aftermarket glass is probably cheaper and so is junkyard glass. Those guys at the glass shop don't get paid much so it should only be in the $300-$500 range. That $2700 is the I don't want to do it price. I waited while mine was replaced and only took a little over an hour for them to do it. The worse part is probably all the glass that's around afterwards. If they do it right, maybe you won't get glass inside the car. Usually you find bits of glass for months afterwards as you go through bumps and bits of glass that was hidden by various pieces of the car shake loose.

You've never carried any insurance other than liability? Good for you! Glad you can replace any of your cars out-of-pocket and not feel the financial hurt. Personally, I don't want to pay for damages from an uninsured motorist, a stupid animal jumping into the road, or an unexpected hail storm, all of which I've had the displeasure to enjoy.

You of course make very good points. Uninsured coverage I think is required here in NC anyway, so I'm covered on that. I have had accidents but again, they have not been my fault and the other insurance paid. There was one instance years ago when I was merging on a highway entrance ramp and was sideswiped by a work truck and it was deemed my fault. I paid over 5K for that one. I guess I have been lucky....but also careful.

Shop around some more, they're a chain. The local mom/pop glass places might be cheaper because they don't have franchise fees to pay. And yeah, try to get glass coverage with 0 deductible. Or at least $100. Less of a hassle shopping around.

Another thing to think about, even with a collision NOT being your fault, it may take weeks, if not months, to get the other guy's insurance to approve repairs, especially if they have some company with a lizard or ostrich as mascots. AND if it's questionable at all who is at fault, it's going to be a bigger fight than I care to deal with. That's why I have a dash cam in all of my cars. AND why I have Collision and Comprehensive with low deductibles.

@ThatsMyDawg over in the SL forums had a real headache getting the other guy's insurance to pay even when it was clearly the other guy's fault for backing into his parked car.

Novus glass is way better IMHO. Safelite is what many of the auto insurance companies tie you into for various reasons. Novus replaced glass on my truck, my wifes kia, and repaired my benz 3 times. Great people to work with atleast up here in cant aford us anacortes.

I sure am counting my lucky stars today I've never had an issue.
Last year my wife's (Honda Pilot) was sideswiped and had a lot of damage done. Her car was parked at a restaurant lol! ANyway, she got a check within a week (8K!) and it looks good as new. Just another example of how we have been pretty lucky

I'm the type that hopes for the best, but plans for the worst. It's a carry-over from my risk management training.

I concur, when my former employer wanted a job, he'd call one of us techs to give an estimate, if he didn't want to do it, he'd quote some outlandish price. I heard him quote $5k on a front brake job on a ragged out chevy once that was probably less than $100 in reality.
