M276.8 Turbo - Intake manifold exploded

Damn, the turbo is only 0.8 BAR above ambient pressure.....

WTF happen here ?

I am surprised at the big plastic engine cosmetic cover also got damaged by the explosion ...
There is no translation feature, so I do not know what he is saying...

This seems to be from an S class, S400 W222. The oil disptick is in front and the plastic cladding in the engine bay is more complex than in an E-Class

It has happened before for the NA engine as well (from Reddit -> https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledi...t=share_button)

It could be gasoline fumes (injector leaking?) in the intake ignited during start up? I know I have seen it before for the NA, and it was discussed in a thread here in MBWorld.

Kinda bizarre. Not sure how fuel vapor would find its way upstream of the valves unless there was (1) a leaky injector (2) on a cylinder with valves open and (3) evaporation of liquid fuel filling the intake with an explosive vapor. And then, what would ignite it?

Interesting that the Reddit discussion talks about using the wrong and improperly indexed plugs. Not sure how that would cause the explosion in the intake manifold. I'd want to know what modifications, if any, such as alcohol injection, were present.

Can fuel vapor find its way into the PCV system?

This makes the most sense. From the Reddit discussion:

"evap system failure causing vapor build up in the manifold, FPR failure, timing issue w/ intake valve stuck open, That about sums up the usual suspects. Top issue is fuel/vapor recovery failure. Vapors that are supposed to go to the charcoal canister skip it entirely wind up in the intake manifold."

I am tracking down the other thread I recall reading long ago. I need to confirm my recollection: faulty coil? We only need a spark from even a poor connection close by. My recollection is that it happened when starting the car after sitting for a while.

I will update once I find "that old thread"

Here is another picture of a blown M276 NA intake (https://diag.net/msg/m1boonfkhiv67jxn9i34dd2j2n)

I have a 2014 C350. My last plug change (this year) was using the plug kit from FCP and the coils from RMeuropean. The coils were Bosch. I'm wondering what brand of coils this guy used? Amazon? AliExpress?
