W212 tyre size R18

I would like to buy the summer tires now and I was looking at the sizes. Normally they are 245 40 R 18 on the front and 265 35 R18 on the back, however, in a comparison I noticed that in fact if I put 285 35 R18 on the back, the dimensions of the tires would be almost identical in size to those on the front. Why did Mercedes choose to use 265 instead of 285 on the back?

I already have winter tires. I was interested in understanding why Mercedes used the size 265 35 and why not 285 35 R18 for the rims in two widths used for summer tires. The latter having the same circumference as those on the front.

Who knows why they chose what they chose
but Width of tread is between 265 and 285 of 20mm is tad more then 3/4" and could hit things on suspension as it travels up and down.
Or tire sticks out too far and does not pass Gov Requirements of being inside fender lip.

245/40/18 OD = 25.72"
265/35/18 OD = 25.30"
285/35/18 OD = 25.85"

Do what ya want though.

I will say the wider the tire the greater the chance of wearing unevenly with Camber out of whack a little bit.

Thanks for the info. I will study more about this.
