Hey guys. First MB and first German car. Bought a very nice, well documented 2013 E350 with sport package, 82,000 miles. It has an aftermarket camera that is poor quality and cumbersome where it’s mounted. I am surprised it doesn’t have a backup camera in the head unit. It has dvd/video. I did a search for a camera but got hundreds of threads. Any help is appreciated. I don’t like add ons that will mess up the graceful lines of the interior.

 

Since this is your first Mercedes, you will want to invest in the tools and documentation you will need.

• XENTRY (Mercedes factory diagnostic software)
• WIS/ASRA (shop manual and labor estimator)
• EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog linked to WIS to quickly find part numbers, as needed)
• Starfinder (pictures of parts locations)

You will need a Mercedes-specific scanner. The Star Diagnostics System (SDS) is the ideal setup. It is comprised of a Windows laptop, a C4 Multiplexer with DoIP, and XENTRY software. Alternatively, and in the near term, the LAUNCH Creader Elite 2.0 BENZ is a popular aftermarket scanner, suitable for scanning for and clearing trouble codes. Ultimately you will want to get the SDS with XENTRY.

The WIS will show you how to install a factory camera and the EPC will give you the part numbers.

Use www.lastvin.com to generate the as-built list of configuration and options for your car based on the VIN. I am a little surprised that you do not have a rearview camera. If one came with the car, you would have Code 218 in the build list.

However, scrolling through some of the procedures shows that this is not a simple task and requires a lot of coding of other components, like the TCU, COMAND, and others, to make it work. Maybe it is something you can live without.

 

The coding is a problem. I saw where the Apple play can be upgraded in the command with just a module, no programming. I’m pretty sure the command module should have the plugs for factory camera. I wonder if I installed it if I could take it to an independent Mercedes shop and have it “programmed”. Really confused why a car like this didn’t come with a camera in 13.

You can also buy an aftermarket units that also supports touchscreen display feature . You can also add aftermarket 360 cameras . OEM units are highly expensive to do that kinda jobs
