Help with M271 CGI timing issues

I bought an E200 with a broken engine a while ago. I bought a new block, pistons, timing kit, water pump, oil pump, etc. and gave to a mechanic to rebuild the engine. The car started and ran fine for a day. When I reved the engine above 5000 rpm, I heard a squeel followed by tapping noise.

Yesterday I decided to check the timing, and it's off. The adjusters are still aligned with each other but the crank is sitting at 20T. Do you think this is far enough to bend the valves? I'm worried about the squeel and tapping noices.

I don't know what happened as the adjusters, chain, guides, and tensioner are new. The only thing I didn't buy is the crank sprocket. I am thinking of buying a new one and installing it myself. Is this a job 5hat can be done with the engine in the car? Any reference to posts and tips will be appreciated.

Send a proper & suitable boroscope which can see valves.
That is the cheapest option to see bent valves without tearing down the engine.
After that do leak test on each cylinder.

Example of a straight and a 90 degree lens boroscope inside M271.8 CGI engine.
Surely I use the 90 degree lens of the camera,.

All photos above is using the Teslong NTS 500 : https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...vaporator.html

This type of articulating boroscope in fact is not good enough its tight bend radius to see as good as a simple 90 degree lens, if valve seating is what you want to see.

But very good for most uses

AliExpress no brand. Image quality is good even at 720p. This is with its articulating head 180 degrees or facing the sky. Cheapo stuff.

If you want proper articulating boroscope, better get this one , a true articulating one, see the middle joystick :

My cheapo one was a simple articulating, but without the screen.
Crappy is mine for use when not heading downward, as the "wire/rod" is limp/soft to be used for other than heading down by gravity.

The better one will have stiffer wire/rod for the camera. Hard to explain, sorry.

Good luck........

Thank you very much. I went ahead and purchased a scope. Looks good so far. The little mirror at the end of the scope is unfortunately too big for the plug hole, so I can't see valve seating.

I'll go ahead and change the crankshaft sprocket and tensioner, since everything else is new. I'll let you know how it goes. What's funny is, the car has no engine light of failure codes, but the timing is off.

I'll let you know how it goes.
