Eco start/stop

Has anyone confirmed whether the Eco start/stop can be permanently disabled on the W213? This is a potential deal breaker for me. Thanks for any help.

Same functionality as W212.

I can't see MB changing how they have ECO Start / Stop configured to work for the newer models, if that is what you are asking. EPA and mileage standards from the government are only slated to get worse, so I can't see any relief on that side that would allow MB to change how ECO Start / Stop is configured. Nothing in any of the W213 literature available to indicate a change. I asked my dealer / service guys a few weeks back if there were any other changes / features not already announced for the W213. Their answer was none. So your best bet would be contacting the folks in Chicago that make that after market solution to disable Start / Stop. Sorry I don't have the contact info in front of me right now, but it's included in a few of the ECO Start / Stop threads here.

ECO start/stop can be turned off via Comand in the Dynamic Select section.
That setting is permanent. I am just not sure if the Dynamic Select setting is not defaulted back to Comfort or stays on Individual.

I don't know how the W212 works but currently on the W222, when selecting the Sport transmission setting, ECO is automatically disabled.
Unfortunately, Sport has to be selected each time but I never have to turn off the ECO function as I automatically choose Sport anyway.

Beautiful! That's what I want to hear.

Are you sure? You still have to hit a button to change mode to sport every time you start the car.

I may be wrong, but as I understand it, the car will always start in Comfort mode and that includes start/stop enabled. You can either disable start/stop each time you start the engine, or you have to switch dynamic mode each time you start the engine.

I drive in comfort mode 99% of the time. If I can permanently disable the Eco start/stop, I don't care if it starts in comfort mode.

I mentioned that the car starts in comfort mode on the W222 and other current models. I don't know if that's the case on the W213.

That said on our SL550 I had to press the Sport mode AND the ECO button which is a pain. I can handle one button since the Sport mode is the only mode I drive in all the time.
Why have a big V8 when you start in 2nd gear ;)

Exactly! No sense having a V8, if you don't enjoy it.

On the W213, it is supposed to default to comfort mode when started from what I've heard. Same as current models.

These cars really should stay in what you want them to default to. My idea would be let them all default to comfort or econ or whatever the most efficient mode is. BUT allow the owner to change the default if they want it to remain in something different. Most will probably be fine with it defaulting to comfort but there are obviously some of us who like it to remain in something other.

it is possible to set W213 Eco start-stop system to "Last mode" where it will remember your last choice
simple OBD2 plug
just search over ebay

As far as I know there is no way to permanently disable ECO stop/start through the Comand or Dynamic Select mode settings. MY2017 allowed you to turn it OFF in Sport, Sport+ or Individual modes, and it remembered your choice, but only when you went to Sport, Sport+ or Individual. If you do not change Dynamic modes, the car defaults to Comfort with ECO on.
MY2018 eliminated the ECO choice (replaced by ESP), so AFAIK there is not way to turn it off after MY2018 without pressing the console button...OR...investigating one of these things.

The hacker in me wonders if anyone knows which settings the device changes by doing a before and after dump of the OBD II settings or monitoring the changes as they happen?

jeffj2h 01-21-2018 07:39 PM

this AutoExpert video is interesting. He says the start-stop feature is harmless to the engine, but provides no value other than letting the car makers slightly game the fuel economy standards. Ridiculous “feature”

johna1 01-21-2018 10:48 PM

I guess I agree that the car should remember options from one driving session to another. I'm curious though, why do you dislike the Stop/Start feature? I like having the car sit not running while I'm waiting at the lights, and the restart is instant - what's the downside for you?

For me... as I posted here, it's the jarring nature of the restart, the w212 shudders upon restart, it's not smooth at all.

Not to mention my concern for long-term engine/starter durability. One time, just out of curiosity, I left the feature on and tried to count the stop/start cycles on my commute home (CA rush hour, 24 miles total, 18 miles on CA freeway). I stopped counting at 118 cycles - too many stop - move forward 10 feet - stop, movements to keep counting. This is pretty normal traffic for my commute. There and back that would be over 1000 stop/start cycles in one week. No way that wouldn't have a long-term impact on durability of engine and starter - at least for my tastes.

johna1 01-21-2018 11:21 PM

Yeah, that would be pretty annoying! I'm much more free flowing traffic then stop a couple of times for maybe a 30-60 seconds at a light. In that case, having the engine stop seems sensible.

It would be much better if it just remembered what driving mode you were using and restarted in the same mode!

Talking about "Driving mode memory" at E-Class W213/C238 it is possible to make an OBD2 module that will remember last driving mode till next deep car sleep (more then 4 hours). A permanent driving mode memory needs hardware module soldered to a car, but I expect also possible. I did not make it as people who needed such a module "very much" refused S&S (splice and solder) version. So either 4 hours plug and play (OBD2 plug) or permanent with S&S (4 wires)

S&S module is extremely small and definately can not be found by dealers, but have to be soldered btw

Two major reasons:
  • Several times when I was making a left turn the car decided to stop at the same instant I tried to go. The result was a delay that could have easily caused an accident. There is a delay when the car restarts. The restart is not instantaneous as it can be measured on a stopwatch.
  • The car shakes/vibrates when it starts which is very discomforting.
As part of my starting procedure I set the seat and mirror positions; set the dynamic mode; turn off stop/start; set the ventilation to recirculate. All of those settings should remain in the last used setting for the specific key fob being used. That is the way a BMW works!

I hate burning fuel sitting at a stop light.

Same here. I hate burning the fuel I’ve paid for while sitting at a stop light.

I ordered this for my 2018 and had it installed. You can either automatic start in Comfort with no auto-start or if you change to Individual it restarts in that setting. Problem solved. https://www.midcityengineering.com/product/eco205/

My biggest complaint with the Eco Start/Stop for the W213's is that it kills the AC when it does this. In Florida, AC is a requirement, day and night. Day for the heat, at night for the humidity. Additionally, because of the need for AC, at most the engine shuts down for 30 seconds before restarting.

Now, if they had put an electric AC compressor in there, I wouldn't mind it at all. Compared to my W212, the W213's start/stop is nowhere near as jarring or intrusive.

CarFan1 03-12-2018 07:49 PM

I’ve gone another 400 miles with none of the stopping or starting of ecostart. It is really amazing. And I never worry when I’m in the left turn lane if I’m actually able to go. Fuel economy has stayed in the 30s too.
