There are some ambiguity in how the Evasive Steering Assist is touted--This option simply amplifies (or "enhance" as MB puts it) the driver's steering by manipulating the wheel torque to move the car around the obstructing object. It will not perform the steering on its own.
My E300 often confuses light poles or other objects at exit ramps for potential danger.
