I've recently changed from the e300 hybrid w212 which is effectively an e250 with small electric motor. I've got a w213 e220d now. Despite being a fair bit lighter the w213 doesn't pull as hard as the old one BUT I had the benefit of a massive torque increase for short durations from the electric motor. If I factor that out, I think the current e220, despite being less powerful than the outgoing e250 is fully on par with for acceleration. For economy, it runs the hybrid close, I was averaging 52 mpg (Imperial I.e 4.54 litres to a gallon) whereas now I get 48. Considering the engine is tighter and I let it drive itself (less economic then I can drive) it's more or less a draw. Which means it's way better than a straight 250 ever could be! So draws on performer to the old 250 but trump's it on economy. Best bit, new engine is massively more refined. Honestly need to hear the clatter outside when engine is cold to know it's diesel, on the move/warmed up, it's lovely. Never going to beat a 6 cylinder but it murders that on running costs.
