Congrats on the purchase. I am coming from a very loaded 14' 550i M Sport and think its possibly the best car I've ever owned. The power delivery is amazing if you want a solid and fast V8.

Went to the dealer and test drove the car. Very nice but we ended trading in two for one and got a new 2017 S550 4matic. Gave up the 14 and the GLA45. It's very nice 4K off sticker and the wife is happy.

I'm guessing the e43? There's no need to be so cryptic just ask what you want and happy to answer. Yes, the discount, the initial bid was 3,000 off the sticker but I didn't really negotiate that very hard when my wife lost interest quickly after driving it. I only pushed it a bit out of my own in hoping she would want it. I thought it was quite nice.

Something is off here. First it was $5K, then $4.5K, now its $3K, and it looks like that by the end of the negotiation, it would end up around $1K or what Ned got. If you do not mind me asking, what was the MSRP of the S550 you bought?

Not that I need to defend myself but the first thing I said was edmunds TMV. Then the second one was a quick chat while I dropped of my GL for service. The third one was after a test drive and he said here's a lease payment. I said how much off list is that and he said 3k. If I were serious about the car, which at this point my wife had made it known she was longer, I would have pushed it and done better. However, why jerk the guy around when she decided she wanted to replace her s550? I have a long history with that dealership in my own purchased and have sent them many of my own clients. I'm confident I could've done a bit better than the ask but we'll never and it doesn't matter. You're predisposed to believe what you wish and I'd waste no more time in trying to convince you.

2016 Audi S8 Plus/ 2011 Mercedes e550 4Matic//Gone:1985 500SEL/2000 e320 4Matic/ 2001 e55 Kleeman
Surprised to hear this but congratulations! Have you owned many non Mercedes cars over the years? I've had my Audi s8 plus for 10 days now and it's a beast. After being a Mercedes customer for 30 years this is my first foray to another German luxury brand. Wasn't happy with what was offered in new e and the no discount on the e43 I had ordered made little sense when one considered the 8-9% discounts that were common on the e300. Starting to get used to the additional size of the s8 versus all the e's I've driven over the years, the rediculous power helps shrink the car a bit. Enjoy! Regards. Ned.

There are numerous E43 acceleration videos and they indicate a 0-100km of 4.7 secs. The M550xi should be right around the 4sec mark. The E43 probably performs similarly to a 540xi (since car and driver tests 740 with the same engine at 4.8 0-60mph).
Price wise, BMW's build site is now accessible. A 540xi added with nappa leather, heated seats, Msport package, dynamic dampers, rear cam, hud, harmon kardon, ceramic controls, power liftgate, premium package is about 73k msrp. There are still a few more options that can be added, such as driver assistance 2 and plus, ventilated and massaged seats, dynamic handling package, soft close doors. If you click all those, price goes above 80k... Of course there's a 4200 super expensive B&W audio option.
These turbo 6's are getting really expensive.
Honestly M550xi starts at around 75k... it's probably better to get a stripper M550xi than a highly equipped 540... I think an almost no option E43 is a more attractive option than a highly equipped 540, since it has most of those options as standard, while the M550xi is more attractive than the E43 since it outperforms E43 at a similar price point.

Why should a turbo 6 with 400 hp cost any less than a v8 with same or less power? In fact, the turbo probably costs more to make than the V8 given its higher complexity, special alloys, intercoolers etc. The biggest change in turbos in the last couple of decades has been much better reliability. In the 80's most turbos died well before 80 thousand miles now they last as long as the rest of the engine despite the fact that now a days they produce a lot more power than in the old days. Most of that increase in life is due to things that cost money such as better alloys intercoolers, electronic controls etc.

I owned an S6 previously (2013 but ostensibly the same car) - tuned it to 560hp and then moved into a 991 911 carrera S. Wife just had a baby so my thought was I would go back to Audi or consider BMW.
The new 5 is just plain boring inside and out and frankly doesn't drive as well. Pricing came between the 540i and M550i as did the 0-60 but the E43 is plenty quick, even coming out of the 911. The technology, finish and presence of the car is worlds above the others. The audi is great and was best in class when it came out but its old and despite being slightly shorter than the benz, felt noticeably bigger on the road. It also had more turbo lag even though the power kicked in hard.
So far i have been loving the AMG and don't see a need for the 63S.

Bimmer audi and MB have been playing leapfrog for decades, this time MB is ahead, mybe 1 year from now it will be Audi. The fact is these cars are so polished now that there will not be much differece in ouright performance for a long time unless you spend serious money.
