Question regarding internet connectivity

Just took delivery on a new E300 and I'm trying to figure out the 'rules' of internet connectivity. I'm signed up with Mbrace and can access the internet via the built in browser (bulky) or internet radio stations. I've paired my iPhone via bluetooth with the car, and on certain occasions I've noticed the AT&T letters next to the signal strength bars.

I know MB uses Verizon, but this seems like the in-car system is jumping over and using the data plan on my iPhone for internet connectivity.

Can anyone explain the 'rules' that COMAND or mbrace goes by when trying to get out to the internet if a mobile device connected to the car also has internet access?

The AT&T carrier name is mirrored from your Bluetooth-connected phone to show the signal strength for your phone calls. Your COMAND is not using your phones' data plan.

I did a test while my radio was showing 'ATT' next to the signal bars. I went to a TuneIn radio station (internet radio) and started playing the station. I then put my iPhone in airplane mode, cutting of internet access.

ART disappeared and the radio went silent for about 15 seconds, then started playing the station again. This kind of indicates to me that it was using my phone's internet connection to stream music. I guess a conclusive test would be to check my data usage before and after starting an internet radio station.

If you go System - Connectivity - internet Status - Online/Offline. If it's online and you are paired to the in car wifi your phone data comes from the mBrace Entertainment, which you get 3 months free.

Another way I tell if the cars wifi is online is if you're on the navigation display, you see green left/right arrows flash in the upper right hand corner the cars internet is updating the traffic on the navigation maps. so without the car being online you don't get live traffic.

Does anyone know if it's possible to tell the system to use my iPhone as the data link? In the UK they put a stoopid 3G SIM in the W213, so I'd rather use the 4G available via my phone.
