How To: Replace center console

I just completed updating my 2017 E, replacing the piano black console with the brown ash open pore trim pieces. Everything went well except for getting all the plugs out of their sockets. Guess I was being extra cautious not wanting to break any of those guys. I DID have problems getting the ambient lighting tube disconnected from both LEDs. The LED housing came apart ok, but I couldn't get the pieces the LEDs attach to off of the ends of the plastic light tube that runs around the perimeter of the trim piece. Ended up just popping out that entire tube and transferring it to the new trim piece. Wasted 10 times more time trying to get the sockets off the tube than it did to just swap the whole thing.
When I ordered the parts from my MB dealer, the parts guy used the VIN and told me there would be two pieces, which I figured was the console trim and cup holder cover. The price of one was $636 and the other one, listed as 'cover' was $196. When I picked up the parts, there were two boxes, both the same size. Opening one, it had the console trim AND the cupholder piece with matching trim. The other box had another console trim piece and it's matching cupholder cover. However, the console cover had a finished cutout, a half circle, down at the touch controller end of the console. It looks like it might have been for a car that needed a cutout for someone's fingers to reach down and release the latches for the console storage doors. The E's use a pushbutton to open the doors, not a pull up latch, so I'm not sure what MB this would have been for. Needless to say that box went back to MB, along with a message from the parts manager that MBs parts system might be a little screwed up. )
Part number for the Natural Grain Brown Ash wood trim piece (and cupholder cover) is A 213 680 23 07 in case anyone needs it. I couldn't find it in this thread, and MB parts departments use the VIN anyway.

Well that explains it. I didn't know there were E300 models without a touchpad and rotary controller. Based on my VIN, the MB parts system told my dealer what parts to order and that's how two boxes came. The system is screwed up and needs to be corrected so the next one of us who wants to swap out the console pieces doesn't end up with extras.
Thanks so much for the photo and explanation.
By the way... based on your 'name', are you in California, or here in Orlando?

The MB system is vastly better than some other brands, but mistakes do happen.

Just an FYI -- The 2019 DOG shows that there's a burl center console being installed in cars with burl wood -- this means it should be available for ordering for those wishing to retrofit the easy-to-scratch black.

Please, if someone can help me find ordering number for the GLC Coupe 2017 black ash wood central console. Glossy one is scratching and is really annoying. . Car is European model, WDC 253. Thank you in advance

W213 Night Edition 220d. (ML250 SLK350AMG)
I would love to have the auto stop start and the parking pilot button on the right hand side of the controller and not the left
I wonder if there is a part number for that controller? Vic Viper? Would that be just a straight swap?

As long as the switch block contains the same number and type of buttons the swap should be possible, the right and left blocks are independant and the wires with connectors can be crossed from one side to the other if I am not mistaken.

Big thanks to Vic Viper! I've also now completed this job and the result is very good. Thanks to everyone who's added to this thread too.
My only problem is that similar to an earlier poster, I'm also having trouble finding where to plug in this connector:
I think Vic said it was for the Keyless Go and is near the ashtray, but for the life of me I can't find it. Can anyone help with a more detailed pointer or even a picture? Where *exactly* does this connector go?
Meanwhile, my car seems to work fully, so is it possible this is for an option I don't have? I have a pretty base model 220d SE, with no keyless entry for example (but with Keyless Go because it's a standard feature). Or, more likely, I don't have the wireless charging for mobile phones features, and since this looks like a power cable (because of the weight of the wires) I wonder if that's it? Any help much appreciated because I'd like to get this plugged back in if I can!

I do not appear to have the LED mood lighting under the trim panel. Is that something that they did away with in 2019 models? Accordingly, does anyone know the part number "without" the mood lighting? Thx.

I didn't know they offered the car without the 64 color ambient lighting in the US. Did you check to see if you have the option to turn it on and choose a color in the COMAND menu?
I'm glad you brought this up. I just took delivery of a 2019 E450 wagon (amg/sport style). Add me to the "black-piano-finish-looks-cheap" list. My intention is to swap for the matte black ash unless the aluminum trim is available. That said, a quick question:

@teksurv sorry if I was unclear. The ambient lighting appears not to function only under the console. It works everywhere else. However, I have read some other threads with suggestions from disabling welcome lighting, etc. I'll try that. Anyway, it's off the topic of this thread. I'll just buy the console with ambient lighting as I'm sure that's the correct part.

I asked the question originally in July before the 19s were released after my dealer said no such part was available for 18s. There hasn’t been a part number posted yet in this entire post for the Burl Walnut.
