Front grille - sport variations of star logo?

i just noticed something in some pictures ...

sometimes the front grille Star logo is "hollow," meaning you can see the black mesh grille through it.

like this:

other times the front grille star logo is all one piece, like this:

Is this difference due to some option? I like both, but if i could chose in my upcoming 2018 build i'd probably prefer the "hollow" star (like the red car)

(thanks to both forum members who posted the great pics of their cars)

Cars that are solid have driver assist package on them.

The 'hollow' star is standard. The plastic cover star comes with the distronic option - the cover houses sensors.

The fact is that the design of the sensor suffers from design over function. In cold weather the circumferential circle traps snow and ice very quickly disabling the radar sensor. That inactivates not only the auto pilot but also all the autobraking features.

Not just cold weather mine conks out with a reasonable amount of road spray/dirt. Over winter i started to wonder why the thing doesn't have a washer jet of its own.

Hollow: standard
Reflective cover: Driving Assistance Package Plus with Drive Pilot fitted. The cover protects the radar used by Distronic Plus.

Very, when there is any decent amount of rain and back spray, my BMW's Collision Avoidance system dies too. Then I get that dreaded gong & warning in iDrive!! lol. Haven't driven my Benz in inclement weather yet, to test the limitation of Distronic in rain.
