Waze vs. Apple Carplay Conflict Problems: Waze Users Unite
I have my iPhone 7 connected by a cord to the USB under the dashboard and Apple Carplay is automatically engaged. At the same time I am using Waze for my navigation. Every time Waze provides audible turn-by-turn instructions, Carplay switches the app on my iPhone screen from Waze to Pandora.
Somehow the voice from Waze engages Carplay and switches what app is showing on my phone away from Waze. This is unworkable to have to fiddle with the phone after each turn in Waze.
Soooooo, I changed the USB cord to the armrest location and now there is no audio coming from my phone when using Waze. The only way for Waze to work 100% correctly is when it is unplugged and not connected to any USB port. This doesn't work either since Waze drains my phone battery quickly.
Has anyone had better experience using Waze in the E300 and an iPhone?
I would appreciate your feedback.

I took the car to a dealer and went for a drive. Waze won't work properly when Carplay is engaged.
Additionally, the two USB ports in the armrest also engage the telematics of the E300 so Waze has no volume when plugged in there.
The only suggestion the service advisor had was to hardwire a new USB outlet into the glove box so Waze has power but is not connected to the car expect for power. That is a costly workaround to use Waze.

In the Waze app, go into Settings, then Sound & voice, then Sound output. What option is checked? I have mine set to Play as Bluetooth phone call and it works fine with CarPlay.

You are absolutely right. However the screen on the iPhone which is showing waze to start eventually will switch off waze the first time there is an audible instruction. The iPhone screen switches to my music list and away from waze directions.
The audio for directions still works through the car soaked but the waze video is gone.

So I think that once you are connected to CarPlay, whatever you are displaying on the car's screen will be what the phone displays - if you're displaying Pandora on the car screen then you'll see that on the phone as well. If you select Waze on the phone, then the car screen will show the CarPlay home screen (the app icons), because Waze isn't available in CarPlay.

I came to the following conclusion:
Apple Carplay wants to control the car screen AND the iPhone screen at all times. If you are using the iPhone screen for something like Waze, whatever you are viewing won't stay showing.
You can use the regular radio or satellite radio, and your iPhone screen won't be engaged. So if you are using Waze and the radio, you're OK.
The problem occurs with Carplay and Waze because both need to use the iPhone screen.
There is no way around it.
Carplay doesn't want to "play" with any app using your iPhone.

Unfortunately, Waze will not be updated to work with CarPlay because it's owned by Google and they want only to benefit Android Auto users.

Apple Carplay to support Google Maps and Waze in iOS 12.
iOS 12 rumored to be available in Fall of 2018.
