This is all subjective. My dad loved silky riding cars. That was his measure of assessing his Cadillac as real luxury.

As for myself, I prefer a stiffer ride and effortless power. In the end, it's all in the beholder's eyes. There is no right answer.

Yup, I feel that the 400 engine isn't as jerky/harsh when accelerating away compared to the 43 (I tested the E43 just to see how different it was, and didn't like it). My E400 was specced out towards the luxury side of things rather than the sporty side.

Plus. the E400 is quite a fair bit quieter with a plushier ride, and that's what I prioritize with an executive sedan. I do have a GLC43 as well for the slightly more fun (yet practical) side of things.

That is completely understandable and not an insignificant portion of the MB clientele. That is why they have the luxury models. Im not into a lot of useless racy bling either, my 43 is debadged. However, Mercedes is well aware of its old fuddy duddy reputation and has benn assiduously trying to change it. AMG is most definitely part of that plan.

2017 E400 Coupe
I had a trade assist on a 2017 E sedan to a 2017 E coupe.

I think the new E design drives much too much bigger than the outgoing E sedan design. My salesman has the outgoing E sedan and agreed. He is on a lease coming due and is wondering what he is going to do because of it.

Having said this... I see why you might want to drive a slightly smaller car from an S class. Either E - the sedan or the coupe will probably fit you well. The outgoing E coupe body would be too small for you, for sure.

I now have a Selenite Grey car. I would NOT have picked it if I had all choices available to me. I had to find a car on a lot for the trade assist to work. This with the natural beige leather interior was the best, by far, I could find - and like. I now LOVE the grey. I never liked grey cars until now. I'm over white and black, for now.

I say, get the Selenite Grey E sedan or coupe - whichever ride / drive you prefer.

Done.

The configurator for the 2018 S class is up on MBUSA if anyone is interested. I'm playing with it as we speak.

It appears that the S450 4Matic is not working.

2015 S550 Coupe
E400 coupe with air suspension vs s550 coupe

I currently have a 2 year old s550 coupe and the lease is up next summer. It is a pleasure to drive. Only comment is it's a bit big. And expensive. I'm currently on the longest road trip I've ever done in it - 7 hours from home to capture the eclipse later today. And it's been beautiful, barely noticeable when I hit 95 mph. My question is do you think it feel like a big step down to move to a e400 coupe with air suspension, designo interior etc?

I would answer your question with a resounding YES! That said, the new E400 coupe should be an amazingly nice car, but a lot different than the S in most every respect.

I drove an E 400 coupe with P2, sport package with 18 inch AMG wheels with an 80K sticker. I do not know if it had air suspension but it drove similar to the E300 sedan except it's noticeably faster and has more pickup.

The S is a big, heavy, powerful car. Everything about the S is first rate. The new E is a nice car, but quite a step down from an S. The S will be much quieter, more solid, much smoother ride, much more comfortable and when you hit the gas, it will fly.

Between the E400 and the S400, the E would just leave the S in its dust, and is almost as well-built if the right packages are selected.

An S is an S...more luxury (in non-AMG form) than sport. The E400 is more of a sport variant below the AMG to appease those who want more than a 4-banger E300.

I didn't find specs for an S400, but the S450 is faster than the E400 in 0-100 acceleration, 4.9 vs 5.2 according to the Mercedes-Benz.de website.

IMO the difference between an S and an E is much greater than the difference between an E and a C when it comes to smooth performance, materials, fit and finish.

Jumping straight from the S class to the E, you will notice the instant "down grade" in every aspect of the interior.

True. My E feels more utilitarian than my S with the full leather designo interior. The one feature (including its design) are the touchpads on the steering wheel versus the older W222 (and even those of the newly updated S).

What are your thoughts on a loaded e400 coupe with designo interior, air suspension, p3 vs a loaded Range Rover Velar
on a daily 24 mile one way commute on Chicago area roads? Anyone driven one yet?...

I like both. If I lived in Chicago and was looking for a dd I would get the Velar. The Velar may be more practical navigating the Stevenson on a snowy day. I went to grad school there in the 90s and left my 190E 2.3-16 at home in CT. I had a jacked up BMW 325iX while I was in school.

This is a bit off topic but.....

So I was just at Mercedes of Orlando in Maitland and they have the brand new 2018 S63 AMG! They currently have it as a training car and they'll only have it for 3 months. I saw it and got to start it in the showroom and revved the engine like a child and all I can say is I can't even with this car.

Like this car is absolutely amazing! It is by far the best S63 AMG they have made to date and I am loving it every bit!!
