Mercedes Benz 2008 350 SL Head unit radio cycles on & off
Mercedes Benz 2008 350 SL, 43,000 miles, date: 8/29/2017 - experiencing problems with radio, tape player and map; this head unit cycles on and off. No control of on or off control.
Proceeded to certified dealer (Curry) Dutchess County NY Mercedes Benz dealership.
3.5 hours diagnostics time, dealer estimates, replacing radio / head unit.
Estimates “$6200.00”. Explains head unit / radio are not communicating within the fiber optic cable, causing a communication problem with other components, everything else seems to be fine. I became weary of the estimate, called Mercedes Corp. 2 days later Mercedes USA Corp. verifies estimate, based on my loyalty offers credit, $350.00 toward any repair. What the!!!!! Does that mean? What’s wrong with this picture? Then I researched audio repair shops / stores all over the US. All recommended replace, best price found 1500.00 with apple play 6 inch screen. I proceeded with replacement. Then I see this head unit on EBay, for 250.00 – 450.00. By this time it was too late I already replaced head unit with aftermarket Pioneer 4200, apple pay. Used Sound Incredible, Brookfield Conn. (as of this date I am still not happy with this aftermarket, dealing with problems with install). S. I. pulled head unit out, returned it to me, then I find out it’s a Becker BE7040, serial # 81264309. Go to Becker’s Web site but no phone service, so I emailed. 7 days letter, return email, Now, Classic Becker states can repair my head unit $300.00 – 400.00 for repair.
Mercedes why didn’t you show me your loyalty and save me all this running around. What do you think about this solution now... anyway my loyalty is to my pocket not yours, so what do you think I will do in the future with you…. with friends, family and internet posting…. postings…. You f!!!!! j!!!!!
Moral of this story Don’t use Curry, Mercedes Hopewell Junction NY. Buyer beware!

Well you're really in the wrong forum, but it sounded like the audio gateway problem which if you do a search is common across several platforms. And you did find the solution, they can be rebuilt, I think some places charge even less than the $300-$400 you were quoted but that may just be due to the particular model that you have. The real moral of the story is to check the forums first when hit with a bill for several thousand. Dealers just want to pop in new items instead of putting in used or rebuilt parts.
