Is there a manual mode?

I'm wondering if there's a proper way to move to manual transmission mode or is it just by pulling the manual transmission handles and then it'll go back to automatic after a few seconds?
In all the other cars I have driven lately there was a manual mode in which it'll never go back to automatic unless you bring the transmission stick back to automatic.

Mine is the plugin hybrid E350e

The option you are referring to is only available on AMG models.

You can set it to manual mode in Individual. Edit your individual mode settings and set transmission to manual. That way whenever you move to that mode you'll stay in manual at all times.

I had a loaner car (E400)that showed what gear the transmission was in. My car will only show that when in manual position, otherwise it shows D. Is there a setting where it will show what gear I'm in while in drive?

I have the tachometer display with digital speed in the center. It shows the driving mode as well as the gear such as D5 or M5.
Next time I'm in the car I'll get a pic.

That is not what I wanted. I want to be in automatic mode most of the time. Actually, I do not mind to move to manual by starting to use the paddle shifters but then I would like to move back to automatic mode and not wait for some kind on timeout that'll bring me back to automatic whenever it finds that it is appropriate.

Thanks for the tip!

If in manual mode pull and hold a shift paddle. The mode will change from M to D.
