E class, C class
As safe as a Mercedes can be, I doubt anyone sitting at the back can survive the accident in the first photo.

rear end collision in a traffic jam; My worst nightmare.
.
As soon as I see a traffic jam in the distance I start to break & switch on hazard lights.
I then monitor traffic behind me to make sure they break too.
(of course you do not always have time for this.)

so many people break only at the last moment, even when they've seen the traffic jam already,
so the people behind them are not getting warned by breaklights...

I'm not sure if the W213 does this or if it'll only do it with P3, but my '15 E350 w/Distronic reacted beautifully in this situation. Traffic on the interstate was very quickly coming to a stop. I was braking...then felt the pedal get slightly soft and heard the sound of screeching tires behind me. For once, I didn't look up in my rearview; I closed my eyes. I then hear metal scraping the wall next to me. The pickup truck behind me swerved at the last minute, brushing the wall rather than hitting me. I pulled over to check on the man and he said that at the last moments, my car's lights started flashing rapidly and brightly, which is what got his attention. He didn't say what was preoccupying his attention prior to this, but I highly suspect it was his phone.

Re: pictures in the thread, 2 weeks ago I came upon a fresh accident involving a W213. No emergency crews on-site yet. The front and side of the car were impacted. And the driver's door was open, airbags were blown, with the driver walking around. The car did what it ultimately was supposed to do.

As much as I've had an inordinate amount of problems with my 2015 E350, I do have faith that if the fecal matter hits the rotary ventilation device, there probably aren't too many better places to be.

I live in Southern California and I find Distronic to be an absolute life saver. It is like having another pair of eyes that are never distracted from the road. I use the system even in sluggish, stop and go traffic. And even if it never actually saves my life, it really saves my nerves, almost on a daily basis. I will never own another new car without Distronic or some similar system.

@Streamliner: Hear Hear!! To be honest, Distronic is the only reason I own a Mercedes and the only reason I'm considering another one, given the bad experience I've had with MB. I've driven just about everything out on the market today from about $30k-$120k, and no one else's 'automated cruise control to 'autopilot' was as good as Distronic. I am annoyed at the government crippling of it, ie: Distronic knows how to stop for stop signs & red lights, but isn't allowed to, but even in its crippled form it's a great helper.

On my '15, I drive with it engaged about 90-95% of the time. After almost 50k miles, I know Distronic's limitations well and know when I shouldn't be using it. I've also found it to be amazingly helpful in bad visibility, using the fish finder screen as my eyes. In my experience, by the time Distronic throws its hands up and says it can't see anymore due to weather conditions, I probably shouldn't be on the road either. I bought mine to deal with part of my drive wherein the 70mph interstate drops down to stop-and-go for ~5-60 minutes depending on traffic. Traffic was so bad one evening that the car went a full 65 minutes without me touching the wheel or pedals. That + the Active seat is awesome.
