My understanding is that FLAC uses less computing power compressing than ALAC, but ALAC uses less computing power decompressing (playing back) than FLAC. If that is right then if you are at the limits of computing power ALAC may play back better than FLAC.

Using FLAC and ALAC on my MY19 E450 I can display cover art resolution of at least 1500 x 1500 -- so this probably depends on the Command version and may also depend on the audio format, maybe they allow more resolution with FLAC and ALAC than mp3? I'm not sure. I've also not tried anything beyond 1500 x 1500 so my car may support higher resolution artwork.

I would bet a beer the OP's problem is more related to throughput rates of USB thumb drives. Their transfer rates can range from great to awful. If you can put your music on a high quality SD card you'll get better data transfer rates. By great I mean something like this: SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I Card
