SOS not ready?

I have a red SOS NOT READY sign by the battery indicator of my cell phone on the right side of the screen.... am I suppose to activate it or does it stay this way until I press the SOS button?

It means that you did not subscribe to an MBrace trial (credit card required) so that service is not activated.

Does it come with a free trial at least? All my past MB (at least 6) came with it and I would use it to call roadside assistance when i had a flat or so.......

It does not. you can still contact roadside service but the actual SOS is part of the secure package (or whatever) and that has to be paid for to be activated

In the US there are free trials for each package. A credit card is required to activate the free trials and one must cancel the subscription to keep from being charged at the end of the trial period.
