My 2018 E400 Lux wagon arrived after 8 months wait. Wait due to scarcity of some part. Lunar Blue/Expresso, Burl, Burl Wheel, etc. MSRP $77,700. I passed on it because; the 2019 E Wagon will be an E450 V6, 362HP, 329 Torque, but more importantly; the 2019 will have the seriously upgraded "assist" modes introduced on the 2018 S Class. A MB Tech said to a magazine; the 2018 "assist" modes are useful 20% of the time but the newer "assist" modes are useful 80% of the time. Two things are happening, which would have left me feeling "out of date" if I purchased the 2018.

1. The 2019 E450 has the better "assist" modes (Drive Pilot/Intelligent Drive features) from the 2018 S Class. The added HP means nothing to this slow-foot.

2. The future of the E Class, and other MB, is a silky smooth inline-six with 48v system that allows seamless engine Stop-Start, and more importantly; the engine shuts off when "coasting", which MB calls "sailing". Also provides more torque.

The 2019 has many different possibilities for choosing stand along options:

I don't know that the 2020 will get the inline-six but I'm guessing it will and that info should be available around January 2019 for a 2020 MY built in July 2019 and delivered Aug-Sept 2019.

So, I decided to not accept the 2018 E400 wagon and wait to get the two things important to me: the inline-six engine and the upgraded "assist" modes from the 2018 S Class.

If I needed a car, end of lease etc, I could have taken the 2018 E400 wagon and then bought a 2020 in two years. But, I recently bought a Honda Accord Touring 1.5L engine, which has everything the E400 has and more for $34,650 discounted to $30,350. One magazine said; the only reason to buy an E Class over this top of line 2018 Accord is: "more wood". And he said, I drove a $62,000 Euro car (didn't say brand) over the weekend and the Accord does everything as well and some things better.

Well, except engine, style and Premium Brand...
But yes the Honda has 4 doors, 4 wheels, seats and Tech and takes you from A to B.
If that is what you are looking for you could get a Dacia with same specification:
Small engine, 4 wheels, seats and tech and it will take you from A to B.

Did you lose your deposit? In some cases, like mine, the dealers ask for $5k... It must be a difficult decision to take to let go the car you waited 8 months for. The inline 6 + 48V electric motor is indeed attractive, but I worry the price will go up significantly compared to the V6... I also prefer the look of the current AMG steering wheel to the S-class wheel in the CLS and E53 coupe, but that's a minor thing. I plan to accept mine unless something is wrong with the build, as my Infiniti is at that point where major expensive problems could occur and I've been waiting for "only" 4 months. In any case, you did the right thing, as when you pay $80k+ for a car you should be very happy with it and not think it is obsolete.

I'm in California. Our law requires deposits be returned without question and any honest dealer won't try to fool you although a VW dealer did try it back in 2003.

It was an ordered car and he reneged on agreed price when the car arrived, so I walked. He said deposits were not refundable. I told him my next call would be to the state Attorney General. He gave back the deposit.

So, I was not out any money on the E400 non delivery and have bought several cars from them,

Last week we bought an E43 AMG Coupe for my son, which got almost no discount so they did very well on that purchase.

And before that; a GL350, the big SUV, which also got only a minor discount.

But I know what you are saying. Around circa 1998 the new water cooled 911 Porsche was hot but I ordered one in Las Vegas with $5,000 NONREFUNDABLE deposit. Didn't like the car but bought it anyway because of the deposit. Actually, what I did was find a local to take over my deposit as he wanted the car and I didn't.

Sadly, I note there is no Dacia dealer here in Newport Beach, California.

The canceled E400 wagon would have been the 80th car owned and the 14th Benz.

My first was this 1957 Benz bought used with 12,000 mi in 1961.

I was still young and did not yet fully understand “boundaries”.

Most of my Benz were S Class but I once did own the cheaper entry level E300 diesel.

Now I find the S Class too big and the E Class the “drivers” Mercedes. In the states; the E400 wagon demographic is the highest earners of all Benz buyers.

Good luck to you in Sweden. We occasionally see horrifying video of riots and destruction. In fact, I was close to buying a V90 Volvo wagon, which would have required factory delivery. After seeing all those overturned and burning cars I didn’t think it wise to visit Sweden.

I would answer: none of the above.

I’ve always liked cars and machines. Drove a fairly large farm truck at age 12 back in Kansas. Grew up to become a jet fighter pilot and then an airline pilot.

Over the years I’ve owned Ford, Chevy, Pontiac, Cadillac, Alfa Romeos, Porches, BMW, Audi, Lotus, Ferrari, Mercedes, Honda S2000, VW, and a dozen Harley and BMW motorcycles.

There are no new assist modes in 2020, In fact the New S class assistance features are an update to bring them to the new Eclass standard. Hopefully the E450 you mention will be the 43 version of the wagon which like the sedan should be an absolute blast to drive.

S-Class technology is refined further in the 2018, w/sensor systems looking farther ahead and behind the car, building on advances first seen in the redesigned 2017 E-Class sedan. The adaptive cruise control now uses navigation GPS & map data to adjust speed for upcoming curves, turns & intersections It takes a while to trust, but the system worked smoothly in my testing.

Steering assist also is advanced beyond previous lane centering to handle tighter curves, more speeds and degraded lane markings, as well as assisting in keeping control in evasive swerves. It also now includes an automatic lane change: Press the turn signal and the car will search for a safe opening, including checking the speed of more distant approaching vehicles, and then change lanes on its own.
