How do I turn this on

As you've already discovered, when the knob is in the off position the wipers do not work. As Vic points out you have to turn the wipers on to the correct setting for rain sensing to work. Then the sensors should slow down or speed up the wipers to the needed speed for the amount or rainfall. There may be two rain sensing settings for low or high sensitivity. I find this feature works adequately more times than not but sometimes it goes crazy fast for how much it is raining. When it doesn't gauge the amount of rain properly, I find turning the wipers off and then back to rain sensing helps it find the right pace. Or you could just turn the knob to the low or high settings which are not rain sensing or bump up the stalk for a one pass with the wipers. It is easy to forget the wipers are in the rain sensing position after it stops raining. A few times they've surprised me on the next trip as I forgot I left them on.

You could do that. I normally keep mine in the off position and turn to the 1st rain sensing setting when it starts raining. I kind of treat rain sensing like intermittent just out of habit, but it's clearly smarter than that.

I am probably spoiled by my toyota Rav4. It had multiple positions for the wipers but not sensitive to water. I always saw at the carwash, turn off rain sensing wipers. Now I will understand what they are requesting. Thanks
